The Rainbow Bar & Grill is one of those legendary LA haunts that has been home to the debauchery of the likes of Led Zeppelin, Guns'n'Roses, and Aerosmith, to name a small few. Opened in 1972, it hit the Sunset Strip (Sunset just east of Doheny) as the '60s were giving way to the intense '70s.
The restaurant portion is so deliciously winding and Tudor-esque--it just screams of ...

EDUCATIONAL LA - Part 2: LA Proper
By: Matt Tucker
Los Angeles itself is FULL of great educational attractions. You figure in a city of more than 4 million people (9 million+ in LA County), there has to be some culture out there somewhere, and we aren't talking about movie sets made to look like the Old West. There is actual culture ...

Nightlife in the AREA
By: Matt Tucker
If you are looking for the top "IT" spot in Los Angeles, as far as nightlife is concerned...look no further than SBE Group's AREA nightclub. Located at 643 N La Cienega (the former home of Club Prey and I am sure countless other names before that), AREA resembles a 1970's airport terminal. Complete with Formica and wood paneling throughout, this ...

A friend turned me on to the Trading Post a few years ago. Located in the expansive parking lot of the famous Fairfax High School (note-worthy alums include Demi Moore, Carol Lombard, Mickey Rooney, Phil Spector, and my personal favorite, the Red Hot Chili Peppers) at Fairfax and Melrose. It costs $2 to get in ($1 for students with a valid ID), but it goes to the student ...

What's on the Griddle? (LA's breakfast)
By: Matt Tucker
If you are anything like me, your first thought waking up goes something like, "Man, I'm hungry. What's for breakfast?" or in my particular case "FOOD!?!?!?" Assuming that you have an aversion to "continental breakfast", or you have actually chosen a hotel too fancy to offer such an "amenity"...you are going to need some help. There are, at last ...

Follow them straight to Hillhurst's newest vegan meal headquarters: Green Leaves. Finally, something to threaten the hegemony of Home, the right-across-the-street brunch staple. Grab a booth if you can--but if you can't, hey--at least you know this place is popular! Don't expect to be spoiled by the waitstaff at this Thai-based answer to vegan prayers; they're perfunctory and trained on exactly what kind of meat substitute ...

Right on 6th & Hope, and with a view on the Downtown Public Library, in the shadow of the impressive Library Tower, you will find the Library Bar.
Relatively new in the area, the outside doesn't look very stylish. Inside, the bar has a nice atmosphere, with lounge chairs and a - as one could expect - library corner. It mostly draws working people after hours, and the music is playing on ...
