Take Me Out to the Ballgame
There's nothing more quintessentially American than taking in a baseball game on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. I know what you're thinking: sports teams in California are a joke. That may be true, people may be more preoccupied with living in trees, eating organic, and spending ridiculous amounts of money on entertainment, but still, baseball is baseball.
My friend won in an office pool two tickets to the Dodgers game last Wednesday, with a large handful of other people who suspiciously weren't at work at noon in the middle of the week. Dodger Stadium is actually pretty cool - pretty vintage (read: old), with a really cool view of some hills (mini-mountains for all you non-native Angelenos), and you actually still get the Americana vibe.
Tickets in the cheap seats can be as low as $6, which makes it a great last-minute outing on a sunny California day. Dodger Dogs are delicious (note the alliteration), and it's nice to be around people who actually eat processed meat. In the hills behind the outfield, there's a reminder, however, that you ARE still in Los Angeles: there are huge blue letters that say "THINK BLUE" and are very reminiscent of the famous Hollywood sign.
Granted, fans aren't quite as exciting to be with as they are in, say, Boston or New York City, but what can you expect in a town where all that matters is the bottom line and your average worker is daydreaming about their future red carpet strut. But the Dodgers are doing pretty well this season, and summer is right around the corner.
So throw on some blue, get ready to root for Nomahhh (how Red Sox fans once called their first baseman), and take in a little Americana, California-style.
