Happy Hour at The Edison in downtown
The Edison, tucked away in the boiler room of the Higgins Building on the corner of Main St. and Second St, is another hot spot that has opened up in recent months due to the boom in downtown LA. The entrance is tucked away in the alley and there is no sign flashing outside that is telling you that you are at the right place. I think that's what I like about this place. You would never know what it was unless you read about it somewhere or a friend told you about it.
I tend to only go to these "Hollywood-ish" style places during weekdays or for happy hour because I always hear mixed reviews when people go on a Friday or Saturday night and it's packed. I am too old to deal with the rude bouncers, the poor service and the outrageously priced drinks. Happy hour at the Edison ends at 8pm and drinks are $5.00 (beer and mixed drinks). They even had some very average but free appetizers the night I went like a vegetable platter and some wings. Although they do have a dinner menu, I generally do not eat at places like these because I feel that these are more drinking and socializing venues and not dinner venues. So, if you have actually eaten here, I am curious to know how the food is.
The place is beautifully restored and the original boilers have been preserved. The feel is a mix between industrial and sort of the early 1920s cocktail lounge.
This is one of my favorite spots to introduce people to because usually they have either never heard of it or can not find it. Of course, I only go during the happy hour time because that's when I have the most fun and what is important to me is good inexpensive drinks, music, good service and great conversation.
