The Joy of Sprinkles

So, Sprinkles may be an open secret to Angelenos by now, but I'm sure those visiting LA for the first or second time have yet to be wowed by the little drops of culinary heaven this teensy little joint has to offer.

Located on Little Santa Monica Blvd. between Bedford and Camden (next to La Salsa), the line for Sprinkles often winds out the door and down the sidewalk. But these cupcakes are worth the wait. With over 20 flavors (5 staples are made daily) ranging from basic Vanilla to Red Velvet to adventurous Chai Latte, there's something for any palate. My personal favorites are Peanut Butter Chocolate (rich peanut butter cake with chocolate chips and creamy chocolate frosting - and, of course, chocolate sprinkles) and Chocolate Coconut (to-die-for chocolate cake with coconut cream cheese frosting and coconut flakes), but I'm also a sucker for the spring seasonal flavor, a dense flourless chocolate cake with a vanilla bean drizzle.

Sprinkles cupcakes are $3.25 each, or $36 for a dozen - and well worth the investment. Eat-in or take out, you'll definitely be satisfied after a trip to Sprinkles.

Sprinkles Cupcakes, 9635 Little Santa Monica Blvd. in Beverly Hills. Hours: M-Sa 9-7, Su 10-6.

I have yet to taste a Sprinkles cupcake-This past weekend I walked past one of their stores in Newport Beach and was fascinated by the line that snaked out the door. There must have been about 30 people waiting to go inside. On benches everywhere there were children, teenagers and adults eating cupcakes.

HI LA-Blogger:

I just read your Blog because the title was so endearing --- plus, it's good to spread some JOY in our lives every so often. I bet the Sprinkles Corporate Staff will appreciate your Commentary also. We could call it a:

Cupcak-itary (R)

if we want to get fancy about it. But face it: $3.25 for a cupcake that is nothing but sugar that will clog up your (or anyone's) arteries? That's more than 1/2 the bus for an All-Day Pass here in Chicago. I have a pretty hearty appetite and 1 cupcake would NOT fill me up. If I were to spend $3.25, I'd at least want to be filled up. I can get that at McDonalds, except there's NO sprinkles there...yet anyway.

With world hunger being as it is and kids dying from horrific diseases, I think $3.25 could be put to better use by not eating Trendy Little Cupcakes that automatically go to the hips and stay there for a few weeks until they are exercised off (completely).

Don't get me wrong: I've been on the DIET (of which the first 3 letters of DIET are die...) for 40 years now and I believe that if a person does want a SWEET, a small cupcake is better than a huge piece of German Bavarian Creme Cake, but the amount is too exorbitant. Consider inflation and Real Estate and technically that measley little cupcake is ONLY worth 99 cents.

I can get a cake mix here in Chicago at the Devon Market for 79 cents - make 12 cupcakes, shellac them up with some Betty Crocker Frosting for $1.89 a tub - which equals $2.68 and still have 57 cents to put towards my kid's collage fund or those needy kids in Africa.

But that's what makes America 'America,' I guess - sprinkles and all! Thanks for sharing...it definitely makes us examine our Food Habits here and what gets defined as GOURMET or not. Out with muffins and croissants - in with the Cupcake. I'm guessing it will be the Twisted Pretzel next month.

Cheers,
