LA Nightlife: In the AREA.
Nightlife in the AREA
By: Matt Tucker
If you are looking for the top "IT" spot in Los Angeles, as far as nightlife is concerned...look no further than SBE Group's AREA nightclub. Located at 643 N La Cienega (the former home of Club Prey and I am sure countless other names before that), AREA resembles a 1970's airport terminal. Complete with Formica and wood paneling throughout, this throwback seems to be the choice destination for Hollywood's A-list. Rational human beings would look at it and ask, "WHY?!?", but then, since when has Hollywood been rational? Going along with that 1970's décor, it seems that the developers have employed 1970's building techniques. For those not well versed in construction history, that translates into: CHEAP. The queue outside will lead you to believe that the fountain of youth lies just within. If not, the $20 door charge should help to solidify that notion. Once you get inside, wallet significantly lighter, you will notice the $5 coat check. So you've spent $25 so far, and you don't even have a drink yet! At the bar, most drinks go for about $11, and there is a $30 (I think) minimum for credit cards. The dance floor is smallish, and the ceilings are pretty low, so it gets kind of warm. There is a patio area at AREA, completely covered, and FULL of smokers. Just give in now...you are going to reek of cigarettes when you leave. This is the small price you pay to be among Hollywood's elite.
Now it occurs to me that I am being a bit catty and bashing this place a little. That is not my intention. True, I do feel that AREA may be more trouble than it is worth, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is a great time. Once (rather, If) you get in, get over the sticker shock of the drinks, and get used to the smell of sweaty perfume and Parliament Lights, you'll undoubtedly have a blast. There is definitely a reason that this place is so happening. The music is always great and the people are beautiful (especially when my entourage is in attendance, lol). I have been there 4 or 5 times, and ALWAYS end up loving it. There is something inexplicable about the ambiance that makes it what it is. There is great energy and everyone is down to have the best night possible. No attitudes once inside. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the door staff, who feels like their $10/hour transforms them into some kind of deity. You work at a club, buddy. Get over the authority complex. Aside from the few downsides of this place, AREA is an experience. That is what sets it apart. You can go anywhere for a drink, and you could probably end up ahead, financially, by simply flushing your wallet or handbag down the toilet...but, then you wouldn't have the EXPERIENCE. You'd have totally missed Dave Navarro drinking Grey Goose at the corner booth. You would be without the souvenir photo of you posing with the Suge Knight imposter (no kidding, wish I had gotten one too!). All in all, I highly recommend SBE's AREA, but offer the following disclaimer/advice: First, expect an experience. If you go looking for great drinks or interior decorating tips, you will be disappointed. Second, take cash. You'll need at least $20 to get you in, and whatever you plan on spending on drinks. This way, you don't get sloshed and wake up with a $400 credit card receipt.
Until next time, my hungover traveler.
