The Heart of Los Angeles
Dreams of Bunker Hill may dance in your head. Maybe you dream of living the life John Fante. Perhaps you've heard of a downtown renaissance (when was the first birth again?). It's conceivable you are here for the yoga championships. Sorry, Bikram does not give out a cool title belt. Probably you are in town on business. Convention maybe? Building some business in the new gateway to the melting pot? If it matters to you, and you need a nice place to stay at a reasonable rate, you could do a lot worse than The Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza.
The Omni sits atop historic Bunker Hill, now preparing for another face lift, right smack dab in the middle of L.A. You want culture? The Walt Disney Concert Hall, MOCA, and California Plaza (which hosts great free concerts in the summer months) are mere steps away. Theatre? How about the Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre. Great dining? Almost innumerable in downtown but Water Grill, Nick & Stef's, Ciudad and Zucca stand out. If you want something a little more off the beaten path, Redwood is a welcome new addition to the culinary scene and it's small plate/pirate theme (what?) is probably not something you'll find wherever back home is.
Other notable nearby attractions include a bustling farmer's market, the main branch of the Los Angeles Public Library (a fairly glorious structure and a great sanctuary), Staples Center (home to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Kings), Dodgers Stadium and, maybe most importantly for you, dear traveler, the Los Angeles Convention Center. In the near future L.A. Live and the Grand Avenue project will make downtown even more enticing.
