Jongewaard's Bake and Broil

There are two types of travelers. First there are tourists. Tourists travel to foreign or unfamiliar destinations with the intent of taking in the local color, but they seldom linger in areas where the conveniences of home are far from reach. Then there are the voyagers, the adventurers. This group travels to soak in, absorb, and immerse themselves in the local culture. This group shuns things familiar and routine. This group, in short, will never travel outside the United States to eat at a McDonald’s.

Although our goal is to ensure that all travelers, whatever their ilk, find the services and lodgings they require, we write with the voyagers in mind. If you’re looking for a McDonald’s, you’ll find one without the help of this site. But if you want the quintessential Long Beach experience, you’ll want to ask a local. So now that you’ve asked…

With each week, we’ll be posting information not only about traditional Long Beach establishments but also about the hidden gems of the city. One of those gems is located on a quiet corner in the Bixby Knolls area of North Long Beach.

Despite the long lines of diners that regularly gather there, the place is relatively unknown to most travelers. But if you’re looking for fresh, home-style food from a family-owned and family-friendly restaurant, Jongewaard’s Bake and Broil is where you should plan to enjoy at least one meal during your stay in the city.

Established in 1965, little has changed at Jongewaard’s. Its locally famous pies, cakes, and pastries continue to be baked fresh everyday. Located in a suburban and nostalgic section of town that has preserved its early 1960s appearance, the restaurant’s still owned and operated by the Jongewaard family. And locals will tell you that they’ve been regular customers of the place since they can remember, and have no plans on changing.

Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at Jongewaard’s are incredibly affordable considering the quality of the food, the portions, and the included sides. Dinner entrees, for example, generally run about $10 and include a beverage and dessert. Everything served is home made and fresh. And because the establishment is run by the family, the staff is always guaranteed to be courteous, attentive, and knowledgeable.

If you’re looking for a great Sunday morning breakfast with the family, the Bake and Broil is definitely one of the best places in Long Beach, if not the best. One word of caution, however: Jongewaard’s is busy almost every morning, especially on weekends. If you’re planning on going, get there early or just before lunch. But if you have to wait, at least you’ll receive coffee and a paper to help pass the time. There’s also an outdoor patio waiting area, ideally suited for families with children.

Jongewaard’s Bake and Broil is located on 3697 Atlantic Ave in Long Beach, CA 90807. To order meals out or to cater an event (locals recommend the quiches), call 562-595-0396.

The dress is casual, the meals range between $5 and $15, smoking is not permitted, and only street parking is available. Jongewaard’s does not take reservations, but they do take credit cards.
