Rancho los Cerritos - Living Long Beach Museum

When asked about Southern California’s appeal, visitors often point to the state’s geographical diversity, entertainment offerings, and Mediterranean climate.  But California is also rich in cultural history, its Hispanic heritage showcased in the many missions and ranches located throughout the area.

Long before the Gold Rush of 1848, which saw a dramatic influx of people and industry, California was a Spanish colony.  Following the Mexican independence of 1821, the area remained part of Mexico until its annexation by the United States in 1846.

Today, visitors to Long Beach can also share in this rich heritage by visiting the 27,000 acre Rancho los Cerritos, the original land upon which Long Beach was founded in the 1880s.  Visitors can tour the historic adobe ranch and landscaped grounds while learning about the Spanish, Mexican, and American families who transformed Southern California from its agrarian beginnings to a modern and sophisticated urban center of art, commerce, and culture.

Self-guided tours are available on weekdays, and guided tours are available every hour on weekends.  Visitors are also welcome to partake of the serene gardens at their leisure.  The site is a perfect destination for families, students, scholars, historians, or those interested in a more unique experience while traveling the city.

The Rancho is free of charge and open Wednesday through Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m.  For large parties of ten or more, the Rancho requests that tour reservations be made at least two weeks in advance.  There is also a museum gift shop for souvenirs, unique and topical gift items, and books on local history.
