CHARGES, CHARGES, CHARGES

When you travel, be aware of taxes, landscaping, housekeeping, tipping, bar-restocking, resort-fees, delivery services, energy-charge, destination and marketing-fees. These, can be some of the hidden fees that will increase your hotel/motel bill from a reasonable bill a night by fifty percent or more. Is this fare to the traveler? Many people who travel on vacations, during the summer, go on a specific amount and can't afford these hidden charges.

When a clerk tells you, before you register, your bill is $150.00 a night(this does not include state taxes), it should be that price--without hidden fees. On a trip to a resort, at Lake Tahoe several years ago, we were told that our bill will be $90.00, for two nights, a special for the weekend by the resort. When we got the bill it was around $200.00. We were charged for bar-restocking, entertainment, a destination-fee and an energy-fee. When we complained, the hotel told us it was a mistake and they corrected the bill. The billing department said that they forgot to include us in the promotion. We paid $90.00 plus taxes, which we expected.

The point, here, is always negotiate or discuss your bill before you leave home. Tell the clerk, when you arrive, what you will need for your stay, and ask the clerk how much would it cost. Make sure that the hotel/motel clerk explains the charges to your satisfaction, then put it on a credit card: Later, you can dispute the charges, if you need to.
