FOSTER CITY, CA: KITEBOARDING OFF THIRD AVE
I was on my way from Foster City, CA, to San Francisco, when I decided to stop on Third Ave. where kiteboarding--you ride a surf-board and fly a kite, the kite pulls you across the water--takes place.
After making a right turn off Third Ave., another right, I came across the parking lot, which was full. A car came out: I went in and park my car, where the car that came out was parked--I was lucky to find this parking spot.
Walking to the kite assembly area, I noticed a sign saying: "Caution, Watch for Cyclist, Walkers, Joggers and Golf Balls." When I read golf balls, I was taken back--it's not nice to call a person a"Golf Ball." Then it dawn on me, close-by is a driving range, but it is over a thousand yards away: Someone must be real good at driving, to hit a ball this far, for a warning sign to be posted.
Because the day was hot with a brisk wind, there were many, many kiteboarders on the bay. Because of the distance that they go out, sometime it was hard to tell if they were males or females. They all wore wet-suits, water is very cold, which from a distance everyone looked the same. When a kiteboarder came close to shore, of course, you could tell the difference. , at this area, on Third Ave., it didn't make a difference if they were male or female because all the kiteboarders were very, very good.
One stood out from the others. She would come fast towards shore, make a "U" turn, then get air, do a body-flip, land facing the open bay and keep on going. She did this several times in a roll, then sit in the water, resting, and do the same thing again: "U" turn, body-flip, and return out to the bay.
When it's a hot day with a brisk wind, you can expect these kiteboardes to be out in full force. When you visit Foster City, CA, go out Third Ave., make the second right turn, drive up the driveway, make a right and go to the end of the road. Find a parking space, and you can watch these kiteboarders do their thing. And if you are a seasonal kiteboarder, join in with them. "And do your thing. Have fun!"
