A PLACE TO EAT

Along the California coast, near Half Moon Bay, California, and about three miles up the road on Highway 1, there is a place to eat---The Miramar Beach Restaurant.

The restaurant was, at one time, during prohibition: a speak easy, a gambeling place, a place to deposit liqure from Canada, and had rooms to stay over night. These rooms were upstairs and were rented out to people, who visited the restaurant at night, so that they could have backroom fun and a good meal.

To get to the restauarant from Foster City, you drive west on Highway 1, turn right and drive about three miles until you see the sign Miramar, then turn left until you arrive at the restaurant: about a three to four minute ride from the turn off.

We met our friends, who we were going to have dinner with, in the parking lot, and walked up a ramp into the restaurant. When we entereed the restaurant, the furniture was a dark colored wood; the bar was well lighted; the tables were well lighted, with a candle type light; and through the front windows you had a good view of the Pacific Ocean. Through out the building, there were pictures of the history of the restaurant.

Along the beachfront, we were told, during prohibition, there were many places that hid liqure. This restaurant was one of the places. The liqure was brought down the California coast by ship, and taken to shore by small boats. When the boats landed, the liqure was carried to buildings and hid, until it could be sold or delivered like promised.

My wife and I ate hamburgers here in the past and they were very, very good, so we ordered two, but were told that they do not make hamburgers for dinner: after a lot of talking, we talked them into making us two. Our friends, who we were having dinner with, had fish and a pepper-steak. The two hamburgers that we ordered were very good, so was the pepper-steak and fish, according to our friends.

While we were waiting to eat, music started near the bar and people started to dance. The weather outside started to get a little foggy, and my mind went back to the time that boats were supposed to be landing contraband---but my daydream only lasted for a short time: my wife was shaking me because our dinner arrived.

We had a very enjoyable dinner at the restaurant---The Miramar.
