Foster City, A planned City

South of the San Francisco International  Airport; east of the city of San Mateo, CA,; and just before you drive onto the San Mateo Bridge---one of the four bridges that crosses the San Francisco Bay---a small city was built in the early sixties.

This little city, Foster City, CA, was started in 1963 and took the name of its builder, Mr. T. Jack Foster, who died in 1968. There was only one entrance to the city area and that was along Third Streeet, which was the main highway used to cross the San Mateo Bridge.  Later on, two more roads were built: Hillsdale Blvd, which runs through Foster City; and Highway 92, which crosses the San Mateo Bridge.

Foster City is five feet above sea level, four square miles, and it has about 30,000 people living in the area.  There are two hundred twenty-three access of waterways, thrirteen miles of shoreline; and twelve residential islands.  The area is sunny, most of the time, with averaage temperature around sixty-seven degrees. The city has a police force, a fire department, schools, a library, and three main shopping areas. With in fifteen minutes, or less, driving time, there are hospitals, with emergency facilities.

Very close to Foster City there are major hotels, motels, and a public transportation system to San Francisco and San Jose, California. If you drive west, for a short time, you would end up at the Pacific Ocean; and if you drive east for three to four hours, you would end up in the Sierra Navada Mountains, where you can go skiing, fishing, and hiking.

From Foster City, you can visit in one day: San Francisco; San Jose; Carmel; the California Mother Lode, where gold was discovered; Sacramento, the state capital; and many more areas of interest.
