There is more live music in and around Davis than one would expect for a small city of 60'000 residents. Some venues solely have music, some are bars or cafes that like to host bands. Since Davis is on such a major interstate, it isn't hard for these venues to convince musicians to fill in another show on their way from Olympia or San Francisco.
'The Palms' is a Davis musical institution that began in a barn in South Davis and has since moved to the Winter's Opera House. The man who runs the place is a true music afficionado, and as a result, the music is almost always good, even if the musicians aren't well known. Most of the music is folksy in nature, with a smattering of bluegrass, country, cajun, and world music tossed in for flavor. Starting a few years ago the Delta of Venus Cafe and Pub began hosting live music. Many of the shows coming through are both excellent and affordable (most shows range $0-$10). Plus they serve both delicious coffee and beer, and they are one of the only all ages music venues in town. The shows vary quite widely in genre, from folk to irish, to punk to bluegrass. Another good music venue in Davis is the G-Street Pub. They are a bar, and are 21+. The scene can be a little rowdy, and the music is entirely unpredictable, both in quality and genre. They are one of the only places in town that will host loud metal and/or punk bands, but they have also been known to host pop bands, lesbian folk singers, and bluegrass stomps. However, while the music can vary from excellent to excruciating, the ones that are excellent will (almost) make you forget the terrible ones. For more information go to: http://www.gstreetpub.com/
