Fun ideas for your mum on Mother's Day

Mother's Day is quickly approaching and it is time to think of a special way to let your mum know that she is appreciated.  Easy ways out are a trip to See's or booking a reservation for breakfast.  I am here to help you come up with an original and fun way to spend Mother's Day.

I am not a mother so I cannot say how or what I would want my children to do for me.  However I am a working woman and believe I am in touch with some ideas on how I would like to be spoiled for one day.  The first thought that comes to mind would be for my husband to come home and tell me he won the lottery and my working career as I know it is over.  However I do not see that day coming soon.

So here are some ideas on how to let your mum know she is appreciated.

Start off by calling your mother mum.  It will make her feel like she is the Queen of England.  Treat your mum to High Tea.  One fantastic place to go for high tea with gorgeous views is the Ritz Carleton in Dana Point.  Mum can enjoy high tea with champagne while watching the dolphins.

If you have the time, do high tea at home yourself.  Just remember high tea is all about the mood and small finger food and desserts.  Get yourself a teapot and a few varieties of tea.  Earl grey is my favourite.  Henry's Market on Harbour Blvd has a good selection of herbal teas.  Trader Joe's also has a wide variety of teas.

You can make a few sandwiches.  Cut them into triangles to add some style and place them on a plate lined with a paper doily.  You can find these at Michael's Crafts.

You will also want to get some scones, which is usually a staple at any high tea.  I fyou need a recipie for scones do not hesitate to ask.  Make sure you have jam and butter.

Get some petite fours and loaf cake such as a lemon pound cake.  If you need to purchase a petite four pan visit Williams and Sonoma at South Coast Plaza.  Decorate the petite fours with pastel icings.  Michael's has a wide variety of dyes for baking with.  If baking sounds too overwhelming then visit French's Bakery on 17th Street in Costa Mesa for a selection of petite fours.

Do not forget some coloured napkins.  Once again these may be purchased at Michael's

 Cheese with Cucumber and Hazlenuts

This is just like it sounds, use a dark bread such a pumpernickle and spread cream cheese on it.  Slice the cumcumber thinly and spead the coarsly ground hazlenuts in between the layers.

If the weather cooperates take your mum to the beach.  Orange County has some of the best beaches.  Coronal del Mar, Newport Beach at the Balboa and Newport Pier both have public parking available.  Bring along an umbrella and large towel or bed sheet to sit on.  Costco has great umbrellas and towels for the beach.  Remember the sun block.  You can either leave your mum at the beach to enjoy a day of rest or bring along the entire family for a picnic.

Stop by Barnes and Noble or Borders and pick up some books or magazines for your mum to read.  If you need help with title suggestions just email and I will help you pick a title.

If you want to have a beach bar-b-que, both Corona del Mar and the beach at Balboa Pier have bar-b-que pits.  You will need to get some firewood, which can be found at any grocery store.  Trader Joes is a great place to start for getting food for a picnic.

If you want a meal that is ready to go visit Santa Monica Seafood on 17th Street in Costa Mesa.  They have a wide variety of seafood and will cook any of their fish and add vegetables and rice for $4.95 .  If you want a cooked lobster just call in advance.

Should you choose to have a picnic at the Newport Pier grab italian food from Il Farro.  They have a wide selection of pastas and meat dishes.

Take your mum for a scenic walk.  The Montage Resort in Laguna Beach is wonderful for a walk and a picnic.  You can wander around on the footpath above the beach and find benchs and picnic tables.  Ocean Avenue in Corona del Mar is also nice for a beach stroll.  The grass area on Ocean Avenue above the beach has plenty of space to lay down a blanket.

If your mum likes gardening take her to either Rogers Garden's in Newport Beach or Armstrong Garden's found in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.  Let her select some flowers or accessories for the garden and take her home plant them for her.  Both nurseries have a great selection of flowers and plants.
