To Do This Friday: Brother Ali at Club Congress
There is very rarely a lack of good live music to listen to in Tucson, no matter your musical tastes. This weekend is no exception with the arrival of indie hip-hop MC Brother Ali to our fair desert city.
It is hard to describe Ali's sound without knowing a little of his background. An albino who grew up in Minneapolis and converted to Islam, Ali's music reflects the pain and bitterness that he feels at always being viewed as an outsider within his black community and the shame that his family felt for having him, hiding him away at family reunions and mocking his attempts at having a relationship. The lyrics are powerful and backed by some of the tightest beats in the hip-hop world right now, provided by the production half of indie hip-hop super-stars Atmosphere, Ant.
With Ant's help, Brother Ali has just released his second album, The Undisputed Truth, and has grabbed Rhymesayers' alumni Psalm One and DJ BK ONE for opening duties on the accompanying tour. Ali rose to fame on the strength of the mind-blowing energetic live performances and freestyle competitions he entered, and with all of that dynamite packed into the stage at Club Congress this Friday promises to be a show that will be remembered. The show is all ages, bar available for 21+.
