Haunting Connections: Movies, Dancing & Love

A mysterious connection that never ends well binds the Hotel San Carlos and the Westward Ho. Hitchcock felt it, or knew it, when he immortalized the low-rise skyline of downtown Phoenix in the opening sequence of Psycho.

During that chilly December in 1960, Hitchcock filmed a long shot showing the Hotel San Carlos and then closing in on an eighth floor window of the Westward Ho. Hitchcock doesn't actually ...

Educated Ghosts in Phoenix

Ghosts in the Valley of the Sun are lifelong learners. How else to explain why area schools are among the most haunted places in Phoenix?

It's no surprise that Chandler High School, a school older than Arizona itself, is haunted. The oldest surviving building on campus is "Old Main". Long-time teachers and staff members tell of hearing and seeing ghostly manifestations on the second floor of the north wing. One ...

Unknown Phoenix

It is said that no one living in Phoenix is actually from Phoenix. Of course, this isn't true. Still, Phoenix is a popular destination among vacationers, retirees and those seeking a fresh start, so it is hardly surprising that there are things about the Valley that few people, even residents, know.

Here are a 10 things you might not know about Phoenix:

South Mountain Park is the world's largest municipal park ...

Hotels, motels, and all types of lodgings are expected to set occupancy records over the coming Labor Day weekend, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Phoenicians are hard pressed to call this the end of summer when temperatures are forecast to remain in the 107 degrees Fahrenheit/42 degrees Celsius range throughout the weekend. Sky Harbor International Airport's projected rise to the 9th busiest airport over the Labor Day holiday, up from ...

Phoenix Foodies Do Lunch In August

It takes something special to get resident gourmands out in the heat and monsoons of August in Phoenix. Something like Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain's Lunch and Learn Series, which feature culinary luminaries Bradford Thompson, Charles Wiley, Douglas Rodriguez, the resort's own Beau MacMilan and others.

The series, now in it's sixth year brings together these renowned chefs, with wine makers, mixologists and sometimes each other for a summer of epicurean delights. ...

Downtown Phoenix Hyatt has prime location and service to back it up

The Downtown Phoenix Hyatt provided a stay I won't soon forget.  The way I judge a hotel is by what I feel as soon as you walk in the main entrance.  At this hotel, you feel like a king.  I was treated royally when I showed up to find swift valet service with a smile and a concierge waiting to take my bags for me.  The front desk service moved things along ...

The Phoenix Airport Marriott provides a great experience

I have recently stayed in Phoenix, Arizona at a quaint, classy and progressive hotel.  I would be in and out of this wonderful city for a 3-day business trip, and needed a place to stay close to the airport.  Within minutes of arriving at baggage claim, I was picked up by the Airport Marriott shuttle, handed a bottled water and swooped back to the hotel in about 8 minutes.  I was pleased to ...

Papago Park Motel 6

I found one of the best hidden hotels for easy access to nearly anywhere in the Pheonix/Tempe/Scottsdale area. It is located right by Papago Park and blocks from the Oakland Athletics Spring Training facility.

The Motel 6 prices range from $47.69 - $67.99/night. I have stayed there and it has better than average rooms, with a swimming pool. The great thing is that it is close to Tempe's Mill Avenue, Old Scottsdale and only six miles from downtown Phoenix.
