Phoenix is called the Valley of the Sun. Most of the time it is. For the past few days, however, the sun has been obscured by thick grey clouds and rain has been falling at record, if intermittent, rates. It's difficult to complain about wet weather in the middle of a decade-long drought. So I made the best of it by indulging in some good Irish food.

Okay, it sounds like a weird combination. Something a beat poet might have spouted when a hallucinogenic experiment went awry. It isn't. It's the 35th Annual Way Out West Oktoberfest being held at Tempe Town Lake this weekend.
The Way Out West Oktoberfest is where Bavaria meets the Wild West. Thirty-four years ago, the Tempe Sister City organization produced the first Oktoberfest to celebrate a new relationship with a Bavarian Sister ...

Not everything is black and white at Lux Coffeebar in Phoenix. Most of the color, however, stems from the patrons. This is not to say the crowd is ethnically divided, or even diverse. Just that they are a colorful lot of creative types, work-a-holics, neighbors and more.
On the last Wednesday night in August, no one was dressed for the evening in ...

If you're looking for a classy place to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine and some quiet conversation, Dvine Wine Bar and Bistro in Chandler is not the place to go, at least, not on a Saturday night. On the other hand, if you're looking for a sophisticated alternative to the southeast Valley's usual bar scene, complete with live music, ...

With temperatures still hitting triple digits, it's still a little hot for patio dining. Even after the sun goes down the urban heat effect keeps low temperatures hovering near 90 degrees making cocktails on the patio unappealing. Fortunately this type of weather, like winter in northern states, doesn't last forever.
By the time the weather breaks, the patio of Valle Luna Cantina will have a new roof. This popular mexican eatery ...

The Downtown Phoenix Hyatt provided a stay I won't soon forget. The way I judge a hotel is by what I feel as soon as you walk in the main entrance. At this hotel, you feel like a king. I was treated royally when I showed up to find swift valet service with a smile and a concierge waiting to take my bags for me. The front desk service moved things along ...

I found one of the best hidden hotels for easy access to nearly anywhere in the Pheonix/Tempe/Scottsdale area. It is located right by Papago Park and blocks from the Oakland Athletics Spring Training facility.
The Motel 6 prices range from $47.69 - $67.99/night. I have stayed there and it has better than average rooms, with a swimming pool. The great thing is that it is close to Tempe's Mill Avenue, Old Scottsdale and only six miles from downtown Phoenix.

As the original Capital of the Territory of Arizona, downtown Prescott will take you back to the 1,880's. With over 600 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, it was ranked in "The Top Ten True Historic Towns" by TRUE WEST WEST MAGAZINE. Prescott is in the mountains of the Prescott National Forest and is located 99 miles, or 1 hour, 56 minutes from Phoenix.

If you like movies, especially old western flicks, then you should definately check into a hotel in "new" Tucson and spend a day at Old Tucson Studios. With over 350 major motion pictures filmed here since 1939, John Wayne's "Rio Bravo" and Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" are two of the studio's Western memories I'll never forget. In fact, I put "Tombstone" as my all-time, favorite film because it revolves around friends and family.
According to mapquest, Old Tucson is 115.54 miles, or 1 hour, 58 minutes away from Phoenix.
