Detroit fans were stunned Sunday night when the Phoenix Mercury defeated the Shocks 108 - 92, winning Game 5 of the WNBA Championship series. After being down two games to one, the Mercury turned things around and are now the 2007 WNBA Champions!
The Mercury took command early in the game, which was being played in Detroit, scoring a WNBA record 55 points in the first half and never looking back. The top three scorers of the game, Cappie Pondexter, Penny Taylor and Diana Taurasi, accounted for an amazing 73 points combined. This is the first time in the WNBA's 11 year history that the Championship has been won away from the home town crowd, according to Sports Illustrated.
"We were due for a great game," Taurasi told the Associated Press. "Everything we focused on all season kind of came into play."
