Phoenix Overnighter - Prescott

As the original Capital of the Territory of Arizona, downtown Prescott will take you back to the 1,880's. With over 600 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, it was ranked in "The Top Ten True Historic Towns" by TRUE WEST WEST MAGAZINE. Prescott is in the mountains of the Prescott National Forest and is located 99 miles, or 1 hour, 56 minutes from Phoenix.

Prescott

My Fiancee and I stayed in an old hotel right on the corner of Whisky Row, across the street from the Prescott Courthouse. It was a quaint little room with antique furniture and a very old elevator. But more importantly, it was crawling distance from the old saloons.

It is in one of the saloons where I saw the most magnificent woodwork I have seen for a "bar." Made of mahogany or oak, the backbar was 15-foot tall and some 50-foot wide, with the bar itself just as impressive. The only other saloon I have seen with similar woodworking detail? The Crystal Palace in Tombstone.

Prescott holds several memorable events throughout the year, so you might want to make your trip in conjunction with the World's Oldest Rodeo, Frontier Days, the Territorial Days, or Christmas time: it has been officially designated as “Arizona’s Christmas City” by the State of Arizona. Either way, there is much to do and see in this 'old western town.'
