I was a little bummed to be missing out on the first presidential debate tonight... at least until the music started. Then I forgot all about it. Tonight was the 4th Annual Taste of Marti Gras Auction benefiting the American Red Cross at the Anchor Pub and Club. This fundraiser was the brain child of local chef Mick Hug. He "cooked up" the event to help those affected by the ...

The termination dust is working its way down the mountains and soon will be falling on us here at sea level. It is time to embrace the coming season and a great way to do that is attend the Alaska Winter Recreation and Travel Show at the Sullivan Arena this weekend (September 26th - 28th)!
You will have winter vendors at your fingertips to answer questions about great destinations around ...

We are quickly approaching the "dark" time of year. In Anchorage, we will lose 5 minutes and 39 seconds of daylight today. Do your math and you'll find that we're losing over 35 minutes of light each week. The shortest day is December 21 with about 5 ½ hours of daylight. However December and January don't really seem that dark. No, it's October, and sometimes November, that win the award ...

Hurrah, winter is coming! The "termination dust," the first dusting of snow in the nearby mountains, has fallen. It is a clear marker that winter is on its' way. We have had a cold, cloudy, long summer. I say, if it's going to be chilly, why not just make it cold and add some snow so I can ski?
I have a fear that we will live with temperatures in the ...

I love our little backyard moose. Funny to say during moose hunting season. I don't hunt, but I know many (many many) who do. This little fellow may end up as the main course at a dinner that I go to someday. I plant a garden in my fenced backyard for my family, but I happily give up the garden in the rest of our yard for munchers like these.

When you come to Alaska, don't expect to be laying on the sand in the sun, not this summer. But, that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a marvelous day at the beach. Above is a picture of a beach below the trail in Kincaid Park(in the South West part of town). It is a short hike in from the parking area (about a mile). Then a ...

The real Alaska has nothing to do with the current GOP VP pick. I was reminded of that on my daily walk today when I ran into this moose in the woods. He had a moose cow with him and didn't look very pleased to be interrupted. My dogs and I turned around rather than get to close.

I couldn't find Obama at the Alaska State Fair. I wasn't looking for him in person, mind you, just some representative or booth for Obama/Biden. I found plenty from the McCain/Palin camp. They had a booth (the news crew was out front), then there was the Women's Republican Club of Wasilla booth, and right to life booth and several other religious based booths. It was a pretty big ...
