The Iditarod Invitational

When one mentions the Iditarod, the first thing that people think of is the famous dog race from Anchorage to Nome. Another race might come to mind for those who read the sports pages… the Irondog race, a snow machine race, along the same route (there and back). Not many people picture (much) the less publicized, all human-powered race that takes place each year, The Iditarod Trail Invitational. There is ...

The Great Alaska Sportsman Show

Here comes another one of Anchorage's yearly events. Up in the Great Land, everyone seems to have a garage full of "big boy and girl toys," like ATV's, snow machines, piles of fishing gear and more. The Great Alaska Sportsman Show is where we go to research the next great thing, or dream of upgrades, or indoctrinate our children into life in the Last Frontier… with gear.

This four day event ...

Nenana Ice Classic

The Nenana Ice Classic is "old Alaska" as it gets these days. The tradition goes back 91 years when some fellows building the railroad bet $800 (among them) to see who could come the closest to guessing when the river ice would break up.

The stakes are high now with a giant fat purse for the winner. Last year's winnings were $303,272.00. There were 22 people who picked the same ...

Spring Time Cometh

There are many places in the world that are already knee deep in crocus', daffodils, and the beginnings of tulips. Up here in alaska we are still knee deep in snow. BUT... the temperatures are turning, the days are getting longer (we're gaining about 35 minutes of light a week), and the roads are filled with little freezing/thawing/freezing riv-u-lets of melting snow. I keep looking at the mountains and hoping ...

St. Patrick's Day

People are getting ready for a night out. It's St. Patrick's Day, otherwise known as, "An Excuse to Party-on." We don't have to count on St. Pat to drive snakes out of Alaska, because we have none. But that doesn't mean we don't appreciate him. In Anchorage, one of the more obvious spots to hit this evening is McGinley's. They'll be playing Irish and Scottish tunes (live) all weekend with ...

Banff Mountain Film Fest in AK.

I just bought my tickets to the Banff Mountain Film Festival this evening (7:00 PM) at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. I am so excited because it has been 7 years since I last attended this festival. Now that my children are a bit older (6 years and 4 years), I am hoping that they will love it too. (My oldest son went to the ...

mid-Iditarod

They're OFF and running! Iditarod 2008 is in full force. Teams are on the trail toughing out the warmer than usual weather. This will not be a "fast" race this year (compared to recent years). The winning team will have big endurance dogs, compared to teams with smaller, faster dogs. This part of the race is so full of mystery because the "leaders" may not be front runners at all. ...

Fur Rendezvous

I've been so busy living my "Big. Wild. Life." that I've had little time to write about it. However, so much fun stuff is going on that I had to jump on line to let you all know about it. The biggest news is that "Fur Rondy" otherwise known as Fur Rendez-Vous officially kicked off this weekend. The Rondy is the largest winter carnival in North America. It started way ...

Mother of all Meeting Planners

We have some great event planners up here, but one of my favorites is Toni Walker at Logistics, LLC. She puts on some amazing incentives. I've worked with her when I worked at a destination resort and for her when she has hired my guide company to provide quality narration for a group. She is an energy plus gal who rides the changing waves of her clients like a professional ...

Dog Mushing: Is it Inherently Good or Bad?

I am a card carrying dog lover. So, am I allowed to think that dog mushing is okay? Not according to one reader. If you would like to see the original article and the comments it provoked, go to Dog Sledding in Alaska.

Although I do find extremists to be interesting and to shed a little light onto one side of a subject, I have to admit that I am ...
