Things to do in Anchorage

A group of artists have appropriately chosen this winter season to present a series of artworks grouped as "Freeze." Even as they have chosen to represent the life in the frozen North, we have been in the midst of an unusually low cold snap (many days at -20F).
Today there is a family snowperson event on the Parkstrip (10th & E) from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. There have been large installations of ...

The ice carving contest was over a week ago, but the ice sculptures will remain in town square for weeks. The weather has been below zero since before the ice was carved, so they should be perfectly preserved, if a little frosty.
Check out photo's here, but drop by to take your own if you are in town. They are lit from behind at night and even my little point and ...

As I've written before, there's just no place like Alyeska for New Year's. The highlights include the torchlight parade and the fireworks display.
Torchlight Parade: Give up your poles and replace them with a flaming torch. Head up the mountain in the dark and wait with the others to snow plow (or snowboard, semi-slowly and in a line... even harder) down "intermediate" slopes. I've participated and been a spectator and, either way, it's a great ...

The Downtown area is hopping, despite the -20F temps from this morning. (We are expecting negative temperatures for a few days). Town Square is especially beautiful with the big blocks of blue ice being formed into scuptures that will brighten the area for many weeks. Here are some "before" pictures.

This first photo has the PAC (Performing Arts Center) in the background.

Winter Solstice is here. The shortest darkest day is a cause for celebration, mostly because it means that the light will start coming back tomorrow. It is zero (F) degrees by my thermometer this morning, but that will not stop all and sundry from participation in the "Run for the Sun" this morning. Starting at 10:00AM at Kincaid park, walkers, runners, skiers, bikers and snowshoers will line up at the ...

The Kincaid Cardboard Sled Derby is on Saturday, December 20. For the bargain rate of $5, you will get your money's worth of kicks and giggles as you build and race your creation against the crowd. Sleds must be built of Cardboard using duct tape (recommended) or white glue (who are they kidding?). Bring a completed sled or show up early (10:00 AM) to build one. The races start at ...

Alyeska Resort is reporting snow snow snow. The Anchorage Daily News says three feet of new snow. The website says 43 inches in 48 hours. And that was yesterday... Alyeska is known for getting loads of snow, but they are sitting, in early December, on a 264 inch base, 1/3 of their usual accumulation.
I used to live in Girdwood and I can tell you right now what 8:00 AM ...

It is that time of year again! The Oscar Anderson Museum (420 M Street, just above Elderberry Park) haas decked the halls with all things Swedish and are open for one more weekend (Dec. 13 & 14) for tours from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
This museum is an original Anchorage home built by Oscar Anderson in 1915. He lived there until he passed away in 1974, living the home and ...

Come to Alaska and go ice climbing or glacier stomping. If you have never tried on a pair of crampons (sort of like a spike suit for your boots), then get yourself a good guide. The Ascending Path, a climbing guide service, offers classes, on day trips (year-round), multi-day clinics, and even longer expeditions in Alaska (and beyond). They offer fun instruction in ice climbing, snowshoeing, skiing, and (in ...

The Alyeska Resort is ready for skiers and snowboarders! The mountain will open on November 26, making a good holiday a great one. What else would you rather do while your turkey is cooking? Throw a couple of strips of bacon across the top of the bird so that it can baste itself while you get in a few turns!
Alyeska has more snow than Anchorage right now. the base and ...
