Suzi's Woollies is in the heart of downtown Anchorage at 420 G Street. This is a lovely little Celtic treasure trove with delightfully warm sweaters, caps, and wraps. They are also host to a toe tapping Celtic jam session at 6:00 PM on the First Friday of every month (tied into the First Friday Gallery Walk). The shop has snacks and wooden stools so that you can sit, munch, and ...

That "First Friday" always seems to roll around rather quickly and pass me by. Here in Anchorage, First Friday is a gallery walk… a series of gallery openings, open studio's, and showings that are not necessarily available during the rest of the month. Most of them are right downtown within easy walking distance of each other. It is fun to make an evening of it, have a glass of wine ...

Our downtown mall is centrally located, within easy walking distance to all of the major downtown hotels. The best thing about having a mall downtown is that, whatever you need, you will probably be able to find it without too much trouble. Need extra luggage to bring home all of your Alaskan treasures? JC Penney's will have it. Need a last minute gift for the office? Grab some Alaskan Chocolates ...

There is year round fishing available in Alaska. In Homer or Seward you can deep-sea fish for Salmon or Halibut, even in the frigid cold of winter. But would you WANT to? There is an easier way to get fresh Alaskan seafoods. It's called "10th and M Seafoods!" They will send freshly caught and flash frozen seafood delicacies from Anchorage to your home (wherever that may be). Their most ...

Keep warm on your winter stay in Alaska by visiting "Pia's Scandinavian Woolens" on 4th and E streets (445 W. 4th Ave.). Pia (yes, there really is a "Pia̶

If you come to Anchorage and want to fly home with a very Alaskan souvenir or gift, then I suggest you stop by the Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Co-op. Their shop is in downtown Anchorage on the corner of 6th and H streets.
Owned by a group of Native Alaskan Women, the co-op purchases qiviut from the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer and other sources. After having it specially ...

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," at least it is in the churches, school and convention spaces around Anchorage. Yes, the Holiday Bazaar season is upon us. In fact, there are about 10 different events in Anchorage this weekend alone. There are a few that I go to every year and one of my favorites is coming up this weekend from 10:00AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday, November 3rd. ...

This summer, Anchorage hosted the World Eskimo Indian Olympics (aka WEIO) for the first time. It is usually held in Fairbanks, so I felt lucky to be able to attend such an incredible event. There were dancers from different native groups from all over the country. The events were unusual, but gripping. The ear pull (a loop around an ear of each contestant) is a contest of pain endurance rather than ...
