Do you have some cash to burn and an empty weekend looming ahead? If you have all of that, plus a yearning for adventure and new experiences, then have I got a treat for you! One of the premier remote lodges in Alaska, and many say "The" premier lodge, is offering a French culinary weekend. This gourmet delight is being offered by Kirsten Dixen at the Winterlake Lodge. Ms. Dixon ...

Before I had kiddo's, this was where I spent all of my New Year's evenings. How can you beat a torchlight parade down the mountain? Yep, they take your poles and send you up (for free) the chair lift. At the top, they hand you a flaming torch and wish you well (hope for no ice) as you follow the snaking trail of human torches making their way down the ...

The first thing I think of when I hear that name is "harmonica." John Popper is playing at the Bear Tooth Theatre Pub to a sold out crowd on New Year's Eve starting at 7:00 PM. The Bear Tooth is a movie theatre that usually plays second run movies on the cheap. The bonus is that you can buy a glass of wine and bring it to your table in ...

Our downtown mall is centrally located, within easy walking distance to all of the major downtown hotels. The best thing about having a mall downtown is that, whatever you need, you will probably be able to find it without too much trouble. Need extra luggage to bring home all of your Alaskan treasures? JC Penney's will have it. Need a last minute gift for the office? Grab some Alaskan Chocolates ...

A local chocolate lounge opened in mid-town Anchorage this year. I don't drink coffee, so I've never been a "go to Starbucks" kind of gal, but a friend took me to this place called the Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge and I will never be able to drive by the Old Seward Highway and 36th street again without drooling. This is bad news for my diet. DRINKABLE CHOCOLATE! And it's dark, ...

"Humpy's" is a local's favorite and tourist's delight. When I came to Alaska 12 years ago, it was THE place to go, to see, and to be seen. It was the new place on the block back then. A lot has changed in Anchorage in the past 12 years, but Humpy's is still jumpin'. In 2006, it was hip enough to win the "best bar" pick by the Anchorage Press (a local ...

The Snow Goose is a brewery (Sleeping Lady Brewing Company), a pub, a restaurant, a theatre, and a local meeting space all in one. It is located on the corner of 3rd and G streets, within easy walking distance to the downtown hotels and shops. Locally owned, the Snow Goose knows what "Anchorage Flavor" is all about. Beautiful Alaskan quilts hang on the walls. The open deck is the place ...

Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé! The 3rd Thursday in November is this week. The first taste of this seasons' wine crop starts as Wednesday night draws to a close. At 12:00 AM sharp, the barrels are scheduled to arrive in at Jens doors. If you want to catch the whole crazy event of the "tapping party," make sure you are there by 11:59 PM (Wednesday night). There is no entry ...

When I am planning an evening out on the town, the first place I consider is Jens' Restaurant. I just love that place. Before you go there, you should know one odd little thing about Anchorage. Some of our best restaurants are socked away in mini-malls… yep, mini-malls! So, right on 36th and Arctic, tucked between Scan Home and some office furniture place is this charming little restaurant and wine ...

Yep, it's a gift store. But it's a really FUN gift store. Located just East of the intersection of the Old Seward Highway and International Airport Road, Alaska Wilberry Products boasts the tallest chocolate waterfall in the world. They have windows looking into their candy kitchens and free chocolate samples. For a small fee you can see the caribou out back or go on a behind the scenes kitchen tour ...
