Anchorage Highlights

I was recently asked about the highlights of Anchorage. There are so many that it is hard to nip it down to just a few. Here is what I cam up with:

Activities:

I highly recommend the Alaska Native Heritage Center. There is a free shuttle that goes from the visitors center (4th and F) to this North Anchorage highlight. It is spendy(adult $24.95, child $16.95), but does a great job of ...

Snowgoose Restaurant Banquet Space

The Snowgoose Restaurant and Sleeping Lady Brewery is known mostly for its' beer and its' great downtown location. It also has a banquet room that is used well and often, currently for the Fur Rondy Melodrama, on the main level of the restaurant. It comes complete with stage and lights. But there is also a second, lesser known banquet space downstairs. It is a large u-shaped room, with the far arm of the "U" ...

Valentine's Day Dinner

Here it is... the eleventh hour... and you didn't make restaurant reservations for you and your sweetheart. I can tell you from first hand experience that there aren't many tables left in town for an impromptu night out. However, there is a "Hail Mary" pass that you can make and still come out looking mighty fine.

The Double Musky Restaurant in Girdwood (45 minutes South of Anchorage) does not accept reservations. They ...

Alyeska New Year's

As I've written before, there's just no place like Alyeska for New Year's. The highlights include the torchlight parade and the fireworks display.

Torchlight Parade: Give up your poles and replace them with a flaming torch. Head up the mountain in the dark and wait with the others to snow plow (or snowboard, semi-slowly and in a line... even harder) down "intermediate" slopes. I've participated and been a spectator and, either way, it's a great ...

Alyeska Resort Set for Winter

The Alyeska Resort is ready for skiers and snowboarders! The mountain will open on November 26, making a good holiday a great one. What else would you rather do while your turkey is cooking? Throw a couple of strips of bacon across the top of the bird so that it can baste itself while you get in a few turns!

Alyeska has more snow than Anchorage right now. the base and ...

Red Cross Auction Featuring PUMYUA

I was a little bummed to be missing out on the first presidential debate tonight... at least until the music started. Then I forgot all about it. Tonight was the 4th Annual Taste of Marti Gras Auction benefiting the American Red Cross at the Anchor Pub and Club. This fundraiser was the brain child of local chef Mick Hug. He "cooked up" the event to help those affected by the ...

Alyeska Slush Cup

It's time again for Alyeska Resort's (in Girdwood, Alaska, 60 minutes South of Downtown Anchorage) annual Spring Carnival and Slush Cup. This event has been going on for years and is always a highlight.

The Slush Cup starts at 4:00 PM on Saturday. Honestly, who WOULDN'T want to go watch skiers and boarders zoom down the mountain, in clever costumes, gaining as much speed as possible so that they can ...

Mead and Gear - TODAY!

If you are looking for something to do in Anchorage tonight, I've got just the thing. How about the "Ring of Fire Mead Tasting?" It's at 6:00 PM at Café Amsterdam (530 East Benson Blvd.). There is no cover charge, but there is a cost for tasting the goods and dinner too, of course. Mead is a honey-wine. This event will showcase the goods from the "first Alaskan Meadery." If ...

St. Patrick's Day

People are getting ready for a night out. It's St. Patrick's Day, otherwise known as, "An Excuse to Party-on." We don't have to count on St. Pat to drive snakes out of Alaska, because we have none. But that doesn't mean we don't appreciate him. In Anchorage, one of the more obvious spots to hit this evening is McGinley's. They'll be playing Irish and Scottish tunes (live) all weekend with ...

Snow-Shoeing at Portage Glacier

What a GREAT day we had! We have relatives in town and we wanted to get them out into the wilderness. Just one hour South of Anchorage, Alaska is a ski community called Girdwood. The Alyeska Resort is located there. We stopped there first to rent some snowshoes and poles for our guests (we have our own).

Although there are great trails in Girdwood (like the Winner Creek trail right ...
