2009 Polar Bear Jump

Here it comes! Plan your trip out to Seward this weekend (2 1/2 hours drive South of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula) for the 24th annual Polar Bear Jump. The plunge begins at 12:30. Gather at the docks... you'll see the crowd... and the ambulance on the ready.

Jumpers can consider themselves lucky that we have shaken off the cold snap that was keeping temperatures way below zero for the past few ...

Trapped in Whittier, Alaska

Being trapped in Whittier, Alaska is not unheard of. Nor is it ununsual to be stuck anywhere along the corridor to the Kenai Peninsula. The cause is usually an avalanche that has blocked a road or many roads on the single path to and from these communities.

This week, however, being on the "wrong" side of the tunnel to and from Whittier caught everyone be surprise. One of the emergency doors in ...

Alaska's Political Scene

I have gotten many questions from "outside" about politics up here in Alaska. Every time a new scandal or big news item hits the paper, my cell phone starts to ring. I was not a political-science major in college. The only thing that seems to make me a qualified recipient of these calls is that, in many cases, I am the only person that the caller knows up here in ...

Confused about the Season...

Last night I couldn't tell which was falling faster, the snow or the leaves. Some of the trees are still green, but the trees are trying to catch up. We hear there is plenty more snow on the way. I'm glad to say I was one of the lucky ones to get snow tires on my car yesterday. I hear today the lines are over 4 to 5 hours long... ...

The Alaskan Earthquake

On Good Friday, in 1964, there was an earthquake in Southcentral Alaska that changed everything. It was originally designated as an 8.4 on the Richter Scale, and later upgraded to a 9.2. The quake lasted for 5 minutes and was so forceful that people were thrown to the ground and unable to stand for the duration. A city block split in two with half of it dropping 10 - 20 feet. ...

Sarah Palin, GOP VP pick

Governor Sarah Palin has just been chosen as the Vice Presidential Candidate and running mate of Senator John McCain. An interesting choice to be sure. Governor Palin has few scandals in the works (though there are some), mostly because she is such a relative newcomer on the political scene. She came out of the woodwork to win the race for Governor here in Alaska. Her only previous political experience was ...
