AK Heart Run Snowed Out

More than 7000 had planned to start their day with The Heart Run here in Anchorage. It is the biggest foot race in Alaska. Unfortunately, yesterday was also the biggest snow day of the year. After spending the week biking and hiking on the bare trails in 50 (F) plus degree weather, Mother Nature faked us all out. The race will hopefully be rescheduled.

We have close to 2 feet of ...

Alyeska Slush Cup

It's time again for Alyeska Resort's (in Girdwood, Alaska, 60 minutes South of Downtown Anchorage) annual Spring Carnival and Slush Cup. This event has been going on for years and is always a highlight.

The Slush Cup starts at 4:00 PM on Saturday. Honestly, who WOULDN'T want to go watch skiers and boarders zoom down the mountain, in clever costumes, gaining as much speed as possible so that they can ...

Anchorage, Alaska on the Park Strip (9th & M)

This early season 5K "race" is not just good for you... it's good for Alaska too. All of the money raised goes to Alaskan charities. If you are inclined to gather a team together, and you raise a minimum of $500, your team can designate the non-profit charity ...

The Iditarod Invitational

When one mentions the Iditarod, the first thing that people think of is the famous dog race from Anchorage to Nome. Another race might come to mind for those who read the sports pages… the Irondog race, a snow machine race, along the same route (there and back). Not many people picture (much) the less publicized, all human-powered race that takes place each year, The Iditarod Trail Invitational. There is ...

Nenana Ice Classic

The Nenana Ice Classic is "old Alaska" as it gets these days. The tradition goes back 91 years when some fellows building the railroad bet $800 (among them) to see who could come the closest to guessing when the river ice would break up.

The stakes are high now with a giant fat purse for the winner. Last year's winnings were $303,272.00. There were 22 people who picked the same ...

mid-Iditarod

They're OFF and running! Iditarod 2008 is in full force. Teams are on the trail toughing out the warmer than usual weather. This will not be a "fast" race this year (compared to recent years). The winning team will have big endurance dogs, compared to teams with smaller, faster dogs. This part of the race is so full of mystery because the "leaders" may not be front runners at all. ...

Wild Salmon on Parade

If you are going to be in Anchorage this summer, you might notice that something fishy is going on around here. All over town, there will be Salmon sculptures, wildly painted, named and mounted on the city streets for all to see. This is part of the "Wild Salmon on Parade," which was inspired by "Cows on Parade" (Chicago, IL) and ""Spirit of Soul Salmon" (Olympia, WA). The salmon are ...

Polar Bear Plunge in Alaska

This year, on Saturday, January 19th, the 23rd annual Polar Bear Plunge will take place in Seward, Alaska. I have never quite been able to talk myself into participating in the actual jump, although I have acted as a "team support member" for crazy friends who have. Picture the girl holding the towel on the dock… that's me! All of the funds raised go to the American Cancer Society. But, ...

All-Women Cross Country Ski Event

"Alaska Ski for Women!" This amazing Cross Country ski event is held here in Anchorage. It is "the largest all-women cross country ski event in North America." And it is fun, fun, fun! Picture crowds, costumes, color, and cool! It is the "Mardi Gras of the North!" This year it is being held on Sunday, February 3rd. And, yes, it is intentional that the event is held on "Super Bowl ...
