Anchorage Highlights

I was recently asked about the highlights of Anchorage. There are so many that it is hard to nip it down to just a few. Here is what I cam up with:

Activities:

I highly recommend the Alaska Native Heritage Center. There is a free shuttle that goes from the visitors center (4th and F) to this North Anchorage highlight. It is spendy(adult $24.95, child $16.95), but does a great job of ...

Flooded Eagle

In a place of extremes, you expect the forces of nature to be strong. The people who have lived in Alaska for 1000's of years know this better than anyone. Still, hearing about the little town of Eagle being torn apart by a raging ice flow during spring break-up makes my heart feel sad. A mostly native village on the banks of the Yukon, Eagle is also a tiny pearl in ...

Trapped in Whittier Again?

If you are in Whittier right now, you are trapped... again. Trapped in a relative way. You COULD get out by air or boat as long at Mount Redoubt stays quiet. But the road and thr train are completely shut down due to a rock slide that is up to three stories high in some places. The slide is inbetween the tunnels (there are two tunnels to get from Portage ...

Denali, The Mountain

What's in a name? Mount McKinley, known in Alaska as simply "Denali," may be due for an international make-over.

Denali, in Athabascan, means "The Great One" or "The High One." The mountain was known by Alaska Natives as Denali for centuries before a prospector named William Dickey came along. He was a gold seeker and, upon seeing North America's highest mountain (20, 320 Feet high) for the first time in 1896, decided ...

Mount Redoubt Eruption

Hello travelers,

Here is your local volcano alert. The Aluetian Range is at it again, trying to redirect your flights and change your travel plans. An eruption is expected and, if you are planning a trip to South Central Alaska, you may want to bring your own face mask because the stores are running low as our residents stock up. If you would like to keep tabs on our cranky little ...

Media In Alaska

Part of the fun of living in Alaska, is taking a closer look at the local media. We've often joked that anyone can (and does) have a commercial on TV. I don't know the cost, but from the businesses I've seen advertising... it must be quite reasonable.

And, so it also goes with local production such as News Teams. When we travel to the lower 48 (continental US), the local news ...

WOW! Anchorage Schools X'lld Again

Anchorage Schools are closed for the 3rd day in a row as Anchorage struggles with the unseasonably warm weather and high Chinook winds. The ice is mostly gone from the main roads and highways, but neighborhoods and the hillside and skating rinks. The high winds blow cars with little traction right off the roads. A friend who left her car in the driveway woke up to find it had been ...

Anchorage Schools Closed Again

The snow and ice is melting fast in Anchorage... but not fast enough. The Anchorage School District has cancelled school for the 2nd day in a row due to unsafe road conditions. We had a wild wind storm last night, so there is probably debris all over town as well. Be careful if you are navigating Anchorage roads today. If you can stay home... do!

Ice Stops Anchorage Cold

In the past 5 years there have been two school closures on account of weather. Today is that second time. It can snow 3 feet and school will still happen. In Alaska, school closes on account of "ice."

After 2 weeks of -20(F), it has finally warmed up. At zero, it felt balmy, yesterday at 20 (F) I was tempted to skip the jacket. Overnight it warmed up to above freezing. ...
