On Good Friday, in 1964, there was an earthquake in Southcentral Alaska that changed everything. It was originally designated as an 8.4 on the Richter Scale, and later upgraded to a 9.2. The quake lasted for 5 minutes and was so forceful that people were thrown to the ground and unable to stand for the duration. A city block split in two with half of it dropping 10 - 20 feet. ...

I was a little bummed to be missing out on the first presidential debate tonight... at least until the music started. Then I forgot all about it. Tonight was the 4th Annual Taste of Marti Gras Auction benefiting the American Red Cross at the Anchor Pub and Club. This fundraiser was the brain child of local chef Mick Hug. He "cooked up" the event to help those affected by the ...

You will have winter vendors at your fingertips to answer questions about great destinations around ...

Micky Dolenz is head-lining at the Alaska State Fair tonight. If you can't quite place the name, he was the "dreamy" one on a TV show called, "The Monkee's." I had such a kiddo crush on him! And now, here he is, IN ALASKA, getting ready to put on a show for the crowd at the fair. If you are in the Anchorage/Palmer area, you really must go to the fair... ...

It's on! The Alaska State Fair is back with a vengence. This is one of my favorite events of the year. Crafts, rides, bad-for-you-food, animals, music, kitch, and fun fun fun! The hard part is getting there. There is one road that goes North up to Palmer (The Glenn Highway). Normally, it would take just one hour to get there. When the fair is on, it is anyone's guess how ...

Downtown Anchorage has its own long time local fishing hole. It's known as Ship Creek and the Salmon run thick there throughout the summer. In June, it was King's, at this time of Year (July/Early August) it's Silver's. I think there is a run of Pink's later too. The fishermen come out and line the banks shoulder to shoulder. That is a phenomenon so common here that we have a ...

Alaska Dock Dogs: Come on down for a fun, once a year event and watch dogs of all breeds jumping their little hearts out into a 40 foot long, 4 foot deep pool of water. There are prizes involved, which should motivate the owners and the crowd. The dogs are just in it for fun! They are offering training on site, but it IS $10 a dive. There is no ...

Who say's there's no such thing as a free lunch? Here in Anchorage, through August 24, the Port of Anchorage is conducting free tours, every half an hour, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The Port is undergoing a huge expansion project. It is a well used year-round port that brings in about 5 million tons of goods through Anchorage each year. There is a one hour bus tour that ...

Some people don't have time for ordinary pursuits. Many of these heat seeking crazies end up in Alaska. It is a land of superlatives after all, so if you must have the tallest (McKinley, tallest Mountain in North America), the most (lakes over 20 acres in size), the biggest (parks/wilderness/untouched land) then this is the place to come. Alaskans are very close to our frontier past. Just one generation ago, ...

More than 7000 had planned to start their day with The Heart Run here in Anchorage. It is the biggest foot race in Alaska. Unfortunately, yesterday was also the biggest snow day of the year. After spending the week biking and hiking on the bare trails in 50 (F) plus degree weather, Mother Nature faked us all out. The race will hopefully be rescheduled.
We have close to 2 feet of ...
