It's hard to sit at the computer at this time of year because there is SO much to DO! The Iron Dog (snow machine) race is done, the Yukon Quest (dog sled race) is still in progress, and FUR RONDY time is upon us. We're gaining 5 plus minutes of light a day, over 35 minutes a week and it shows. Everyone has extra energy and needs an outlet. Fur ...

Fairbanks is a full day's trip from Anchorage (about 8 hours by car or 12 hours on the train), but it is just a little hop by plane with several flights a day offered from Anchorage. There are some wonderful things to see and do in Fairbanks. One of the best attractions is the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (907 Yukon drive).
One of the new ...

Super Bowl Sunday? In Alaska? Yep, sure, there'll be plenty plastered to their TV's this Sunday. BUT, if you are more into doing something exciting than you are into watching funny commercials... oh yeah, and a game... then get yer keester outside and play. The snow is falling in buckets today. Good good news for our iced-up city! Here are some great ideas for your outdoor adventure on Sunday!

The Richard Freisinger Ice Fishing Jamboree is this weekend, Jan 24 & 25. I cannot say enough about this great event that we wait for every year. The program is put on by the parks and Rec. and is offered free to area children. Everything you need is provided: fishing pole, bait, precut holes in the ice, warming tent, and hot drinks. The kids love it and even I can ...

Anchorage has a charter school or "optional" school program available. In addition to your local neighborhood school, you can choose to send your child to a public school with a twist. Optional schools are available to everyone, but because of limited space, operate on a lottery system. This years spring lottery is March 20 (your application(s) is(are) due on March 19th to be eligible).
There is a Fair on Saturday, January 24th ...

Anchorage is watching as Obama takes oath. Even in this conservative state, there are a multitude of Democrats (and some Republicans) gleeful that Obama is taking office today. No one can deny, fan or foe, that today is a historically significant day for America. Some of have even bigger thoughts than that, HURRAH for Obama!
If you would like to share the moment with others, then gather together to watch the festivities! ...

Here it comes! Plan your trip out to Seward this weekend (2 1/2 hours drive South of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula) for the 24th annual Polar Bear Jump. The plunge begins at 12:30. Gather at the docks... you'll see the crowd... and the ambulance on the ready.
Jumpers can consider themselves lucky that we have shaken off the cold snap that was keeping temperatures way below zero for the past few ...

A group of artists have appropriately chosen this winter season to present a series of artworks grouped as "Freeze." Even as they have chosen to represent the life in the frozen North, we have been in the midst of an unusually low cold snap (many days at -20F).
Today there is a family snowperson event on the Parkstrip (10th & E) from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. There have been large installations of ...

I am so happy that our town is hosting another National event, and a bit bummed that the weather has mucked it up. Our arctic blast has put a damper on the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships. It seems surprising that they would cancel SKI races due to cold weather... a little counter intuitive... but that they have done day after day. They finally got a few races out today. ...
