Last Day! Seward Salmon Derby

Today is the last day to try your luck fishing in the Seward Silver Salmon Derby. The top prize is $10,000... so don't forget to buy your $10 derby ticket BEFORE you go fishing. Kevin Daniel is currently in the lead with his nice 18.66 pound salmon to his name. That will be tough to beat... but there ARE plenty of fish in the sea, so grab a pole, buy ...

Free Tours of the Anchorage Port

The Anchorage Port has continued its' program of free Sunday tours this summer. See the port close up, treat the family to a free lunch of hotdogs, and learn about the expansion project. I meant to do this last summer and never did. I'm glad to have a second chance to get down there. The Port is on the North side of town (you can walk there from downtown hotels) ...

Fishing and Bird Watching

I like free events... who doesn't, however $2 is almost free... especially when it comes to a Fishing Derby. Saturday, July 11 from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM you can bring your kiddo's down to Taku Lake for a Kids' Fishing Derby. There are clinics and contests. You need your own pole for this one. Children can register for the derby for the afore mentioned price of $2. Adults would ...

Saturday! Free Kid Fun!

Now HERE is an event worth going to! On Saturday they are having the grand opening of the Scott Gomez Outdoor Ice Skating rink. There will not be skating (it's summer after all) but there will be "Face-painting, circus arts, floor hockey, arts and crafts, raffle drawings, and a dessert bar." This is all just a few blocks away from Scott's childhood home at the Tikishla (Black Bear) Park (Northern ...

Alaskan Idol Auditions

The good news is that Simon Cowell won't be there! The bad news is that you have to pay (just $5) to enter. The good news is that you could win $1000 (and other prizes). The bad news is that you may have to sing against a cute little 3-year old to win it.

You and/or your talented tot can sing for the judges. There are three different age categories: 2-6, 7-15, ...

Three Barons Renaissance Faire

Hear ye, hear ye... Whither art the olde faire? If you can talk like this... or at least understand when other people talk this way then you might enjoy the Three Barons Renaissance Faire at the Tozier track this weekend (3600 E. Tudor Road). It's been 10 years since I attended the event, but it is a long standing yearly event with great costumes and themed games and events. Think ...

Anchorage Museum Reopens

img_2332.JPG

Ohhh... FINALLY! The museum hasn't been closed for very long... just 2 months, but it feels like forever! And now when it opens again this weekend, with a big bang, it will be bigger and better than before. Well, I hope so at least.

I'm not crazy about the outside of the addition. The shiney, flashy, glass and metal clashes with the old simple brick that was ...

Anchorage Market & Spring!

It is spring in Alaska. After weeks of annoyingly sunny warm weather (wink), it finally rained yesterday. Everything lools fresh and green today!

It is fitting then, that today is the first day of the Anchorage Market and Festival, a weekend market that is open on Saturday's and Sunday's throughout the summer. 400 vendors pack themselves into the parking lot on 3rd and E street, musicians play, dancers dance, fresh produce ...

Running Wild In Alaska

The snow is gone (from the Anchorage Bowl trails) and it is "that" time of year once again. the start of the running season. There are many races that you can participate in from shorter children's runs (the Zoo just had one last week) to marathons... and then there's the marathon up over a mountain pass.

The Mountain runs get a lot of special attention and most limit their numbers, making ...
