If you made a reservation for the Easter train, it's time to hop out of bed and make your way to the Alaska Railroad Depot for a 1/2 day of family friendly Easter fun. The Easter train is sold out this year, so you must have a reservation to get in.
This is a family day of rumbling down the track to Portage and back. The Easter bunny will be ...

It is so nice to pamper yourself every once and a while. Usually, in Anchorage, that takes some planning. But Intuitions and Allure book up pretty far in advance. Especially when you want a treat with a friend such as side by side pedicures. When a friend suggested pedicures... um... the next day. I said there was no way we'd find a place. She suggested I call Darae's and so ...

It's time to start planning your Fur Rondy Schedule. There's no way you can do it all, so you will have to pick and chose the best events to attend. Here's MY must do wish-list for Friday the 27th.
The Great Train Show - If you have little ones, this is a no-brainer. The historic Alaska Railroad Building on 1st Avenue set ...

Do you have the fastest growing beard in the North? PROVE IT! Today at 11:45 is the official weigh in... er.. shave in at the downtown Westmark Hotel. You can also register for the event at the Great Alaska Beer and Barleywine Festival this weekend, the Rondy office at 400 D street (at any time they are open), and the Alaska Mint. Here it comes! Plan your trip out to Seward this weekend (2 1/2 hours drive South of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula) for the 24th annual Polar Bear Jump. The plunge begins at 12:30. Gather at the docks... you'll see the crowd... and the ambulance on the ready.
Jumpers can consider themselves lucky that we have shaken off the cold snap that was keeping temperatures way below zero for the past few ...

A group of artists have appropriately chosen this winter season to present a series of artworks grouped as "Freeze." Even as they have chosen to represent the life in the frozen North, we have been in the midst of an unusually low cold snap (many days at -20F).
Today there is a family snowperson event on the Parkstrip (10th & E) from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. There have been large installations of ...

The ice carving contest was over a week ago, but the ice sculptures will remain in town square for weeks. The weather has been below zero since before the ice was carved, so they should be perfectly preserved, if a little frosty.
Check out photo's here, but drop by to take your own if you are in town. They are lit from behind at night and even my little point and ...

If you have not yet decided what to do for New Year's Eve in Anchorage, you still have plenty of options. The most obvious and available choice is to join in the Fire & Ice Celebration in Town Square, which is located between 5th and 6th Avenues on E Street.
The kid fun starts at 4:00 PM with Ice Skating and the Anchortown Circus (don't ask me what that is...), at ...

As I've written before, there's just no place like Alyeska for New Year's. The highlights include the torchlight parade and the fireworks display.
Torchlight Parade: Give up your poles and replace them with a flaming torch. Head up the mountain in the dark and wait with the others to snow plow (or snowboard, semi-slowly and in a line... even harder) down "intermediate" slopes. I've participated and been a spectator and, either way, it's a great ...

The Downtown area is hopping, despite the -20F temps from this morning. (We are expecting negative temperatures for a few days). Town Square is especially beautiful with the big blocks of blue ice being formed into scuptures that will brighten the area for many weeks. Here are some "before" pictures.

This first photo has the PAC (Performing Arts Center) in the background.
