Happy Moose Year

Happy Moose Year! Here are some recent pictures taken from my car. The first was taken on New year's day out in Girdwood, the second just 3 days ago in South Anchorage.

"Cold" Defined Clearly

If you just weren't quite sure what "cold" really means, then Alaska is the place to be right now. We haven't made it above 0 (zero) degrees (F) in over a week. The overnight lows are hitting to -20's (F) in Anchorage. Pipes are freezing all over the state. Fairbanks is reporting -50(F). If you want to know how cold -50(F) is... well. They are experiencing "square tires" right about ...

Winter Photo's of Anchorage

Anchorage is a beautiful spot on the planet year-round.

In winter the setting sun (sun sets at 3:41 PM today) creates alpenglow on the surrounding mountains. In this photo, the rosy glow is from the Chugach Mountains behind the city of Anchorage.

Anatomy of an Alask-o-phile

In my position with my son's preschool, I take calls from people looking for openings in the school for their children. Sometimes those calls come in from out of state. It is so interesting to be on the receiving end of a call from a Cheechako (someone who is unfamiliar with, or new to, Alaska). If the call contains snippets of "we're moving there because..." and the reasons are anything ...

The Dark of Day

It has come. We are in the dark days of winter, the blue-gray cold of late November. It only gets darker and colder from here.

It is 15 (F) degrees in Anchorage today. The hoar frost is just starting to turn anything of color into a white furry mass of ice. The difference is clear in these two photos, one of the first snow in early October, and one today....

Ice Skating & Speed Skating in Anchorage

‘Tis the Season! The weather has been consistently cold since early October. Most of our lakes here in Anchorage have frozen enough to start goofing around on them. Because of the dangerous consequences of skating on the wrong lake at the worng time, it is important to keep an eye on the conditions. The Municipality of Anchorage (Parks and Rec) measures the ice and reports it along with the ...

Moving to Alaska?

I just heard from a woman who was moving to Alaska. She was calling to inquire about the preschool where my son goes (I am the contact for newcomers). She is coming from New Jersey and I found myself falling into the role of cheerleader, telling her all of the great things about living here and there ARE great things! A lot of people here are from "somewhere else," which ...

Alaska's Political Scene

I have gotten many questions from "outside" about politics up here in Alaska. Every time a new scandal or big news item hits the paper, my cell phone starts to ring. I was not a political-science major in college. The only thing that seems to make me a qualified recipient of these calls is that, in many cases, I am the only person that the caller knows up here in ...

Today in Anchorage

I know I shouldn't keep going on about the weather... but it does seem exceptionally early to have so much snow. The moose in my neighbors yard this morning put on a good show, so I can show you a moose AND the snow... these pictures were taken from my window about an hour ago.

Alaska Homesteader Blog

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the wilds of Alaska on a traditional homestead? A homesteading family is writing a blog about their experiences on their homestead near Haines, Alaska (North of Juneau on the Panhandle of Alaska). They are each taking turns the father "hunter," the mother "gardener" and the teenaged daughter "apprentice," each write from their own perspective. Try on a different ...
