Anchorage's first wood framed house was built in 1915. It is now a quaint museum called, "The Oscar Anderson House." Oscar Anderson was the "18th white man to step foot in Anchorage." It is a special treat to see it this weekend (and next weekend), between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, as the home is returned to its original Swedish Christmas Splendor. The cost is a minimal $1 - $3 ...

The Anchorage Museum of History and Art is hosting its annual holiday craft fair over the long Thanksgiving weekend. This juried show (artists had to show samples of their work to be selected to participate) features 45 artists selling their crafts, including: fiber arts, pottery, jewelry, and handmade glass items. One of the perks of attending the craft show is that the entrance to the museum is FREE! What a ...

Chilkoot Charlie's, AKA "Koots" is where the music, dance, and night life is for those who need no (or little) sleep. They "cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you." They grew up from a sleepy little bar in the early 70's to the wild packed crazy spot that it is today. They now have 3 dance floors, 3 stages and 11 bars. The bar is maze like as ...

Alaska is an adventure. Everywhere you look, nature is beckoning you to experience it somehow. In winter, the dog mushers ARE Alaska , distilled. They certainly work hard year-round to enjoy their winter sport! Imagine having 12 dogs (or 50 to 300 dogs like the big kennels have). There must be a lot of poop to scoop! But, for the hardy souls who thrive in the winter landscape, a dog ...

It is the "final four" of Alaska. Only, it's more like "the First Four" as it is the "longest running early season college basketball tournament." Held in Anchorage every year over the week of Thanksgiving, The Great Alaska Shootout is big enough to bring in, gasp, TRAFFIC. (I'm sure this is not a big deal to those of you from big cities… but we sure notice it up here!)
Both the ...

Anchorage's home hockey team offers you a chance to indulge in a real sport for a change. No mamby-pamby play by the rules sport… hmmm… okay, I guess there ARE rules in hockey, but I hardly notice them in the excitement.
The first time I went to a game, the announcer led the crown in the cry, "Hey goalie, your mother called. She said to tell you, "You S**K!" I ...

The Historic Crow Creek Gold Mine has a lot to offer a summer traveler. Bring your RV or tent and camp here, have a picnic on the beautiful grounds, hike some amazing trails, catch a local band or theatre group in the outdoor theatre, or if you want an extra thrill, try your hand at old-fashioned gold panning.
When I first came to Alaska as a tour guide, it was part ...

Alaska is the "flying-est" state in the union. More people, per capita, own their own planes up here than anywhere else in the world. Flight opened up our state in a way that would not have been possible any other way. Therefore, the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum -presents a valuable view of the last 90 years of Alaskan history. Located on the banks of Lake Hood, the busiest float plane ...

Taking a day cruise out of Anchorage is a "must do" if you have an extra day here. There are several options. We took our most recent out of town visitor on the 26 Glaciers Tour (Phillips Cruises and Tours)out of Whittier, Alaska. There are lots of great reasons to get yourself to Whittier. One of the reasons is that the trip there is a mini adventure all by itself.
Whittier is ...

We are lucky, in Anchorage, to boast a top notch ski area just 45 minutes away. Girdwood is officially part of the Municipality of Anchorage. Alyeska Mountain reaches a height of 3939 feet. The highest lift goes to about 2500 feet. The base elevation is just 250 feet above sea level. That means no elevation sickness when you ski here.
They get plenty of snow too, with an average of over ...
