Hope is about 1 1/2 hours from Anchorage on the other side of the Turnagain Arm. In 1886, gold was discovered here. 3000 people lived in Hope before Anchorage even existed. Now Hope is a sleepy little town of 200. Many of the buildings are original. They have a great camp ground with a fabulous view and easy fishing for Pinks (salmon) at the ...

The Silvers are in at Ship Creek! Whether you live here or are just visiting, a walk down to Ship Creek is a treat at this time of year. Ship Creek is within fairly easy walking distance of most of the downtown Anchorage hotels. It is down hill, so if you are not nimble, you can look into the free "Ulu Factory" trolley which departs from the visitors center (4th & F) to ...

I was recently asked about the highlights of Anchorage. There are so many that it is hard to nip it down to just a few. Here is what I cam up with:
Activities:
I highly recommend the Alaska Native Heritage Center. There is a free shuttle that goes from the visitors center (4th and F) to this North Anchorage highlight. It is spendy(adult $24.95, child $16.95), but does a great job of ...

If you are looking for a fun kid day, then pop in to the Aurora Waldorf School's May Faire at 3250 Baxter road between 11:00 - 3:00 PM today. See pictures from last years event to get the "feel" of what it is about. But think groovy, green, gems, fairies, gnomes... you get the idea. Fantastical and fun, this outdoor fundraiser is a great way to get a little ...

The Anchorage Opera's current production of "Hot Spanish Nights" is not what one would expect of an evening at the opera. Playing through the Weekend (March 27- 29), it is a good introduction to opera for a first time opera audience. Think of it as "Opera Light."
The first act is not opera at all, in fact, but rather a sampling of some of the other artistic talents and arts from ...

The last time I went to Bouncin' Bears in Anchorage, it reminded me of Mexican Jumping beans. This place is a kiddie paradise. Imagine one of those bounce houses that you see at the local fairs and events... now put about 8 of those inside a warehouse, inflatable obstacle courses with high steep balloon blown up slides, regular bounce houses and a big bubble on the floor, like an inside-out ...

Here it is... the eleventh hour... and you didn't make restaurant reservations for you and your sweetheart. I can tell you from first hand experience that there aren't many tables left in town for an impromptu night out. However, there is a "Hail Mary" pass that you can make and still come out looking mighty fine.
The Double Musky Restaurant in Girdwood (45 minutes South of Anchorage) does not accept reservations. They ...

Fairbanks is a full day's trip from Anchorage (about 8 hours by car or 12 hours on the train), but it is just a little hop by plane with several flights a day offered from Anchorage. There are some wonderful things to see and do in Fairbanks. One of the best attractions is the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (907 Yukon drive).
One of the new ...

If you have ever wondered what Alaskan's DO with all of their time in the dark of the winter... wonder no more. We make elaborate costumes for ski races... apparently. The Alaska Ski for Women was today (during the Superbowl). Well over 1000 women turned out and decked out for the event. Check out the ADN PHOTO's

Hotelsbycity has a great photo bed jumping blog... but if you can't quite bring yourself to let the kiddo's jump on the beds willy nilly, then have I EVER got the place for you. Bouncing Bears has 3 locations in the area. Palmer, Wasilla, and YES! Anchorage! I took my kids to the Anchorage location and they were begging me to bring them back before we even made it ...
