Flooded Eagle
In a place of extremes, you expect the forces of nature to be strong. The people who have lived in Alaska for 1000's of years know this better than anyone. Still, hearing about the little town of Eagle being torn apart by a raging ice flow during spring break-up makes my heart feel sad. A mostly native village on the banks of the Yukon, Eagle is also a tiny pearl in the tourism circuit through Alaska and the Yukon.
As a guide, I have spent hours in the cafe, now a pile of debris, as I waited for a delayed motorcoach or boat. The people there are always a joy to speak with. Despite the summer craziness that is tourism, they are always gracious and lovely.
Now they are calmly attending to the necessity of rebuilding. This is not a village of great means, but rebuild they must and NOW. They have to have livable accommodations before winter comes again. Someone with their wits about them has put together a website listing all of the things that they need. I'll list it here for anyone with the desire to help.
