Let the Winter Games Begin

Here we go! Winter is on its' merry way and so is the winter sports season. If you need to upgrade your equipment... or if you want to try something new and are looking for "previously loved' equipment, then get out to the sports expo's around town this weekend.

The annual West High Ski & Snowboard Expo, sponsored by the Alyeska Ski Club, has a huge gear swap area. Downhill skis, Nordic gear, snowboards, ice climbing, snowshoes... everything you can think of. If you are serious, get there early for a good selection of used gear. There should also be vendors there with the latest and greatest... but I always head straight for the ski swap and can't tell you much about that. Local clubs and organizations will be there so you can sign up for programs and lessons if you like. This is a great event for gearing up for winter! (It is also your chance to sell last years gear for cash to suppliment your new stuff.)

It is held at West High (1700 Hillcrest Drive) on Saturday (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM if you're selling, 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM if you're buying) and on Sunday (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM if you're selling, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM if you're buying... yep... overlap on Sunday)

If you are looking for BIG WINTER TOYS, then the Oxygen & Octane event at the brand new Dena'ina Convention Center is probably where you should go. This event starts today (Friday 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM, 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Saturday, and 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Sunday. This event will have snow machines, vacation packages, raffles, door prizes and more. Avalanche and snow safety seminars will be ongoing throughout the day.

As it is the first official convention in the new center, it is sure to be a huge deal. Parking is up to you, but entrance is free once you get there.  Have fun!
