"Miss Rondy" Competition
As we begin the downhill slide into winter, the Fur Rondy organizers are getting ready for their big event, the largest winter carnival in North America. They will be holding the "Miss Rondy" where young girls and women, ages 15 - 25, will compete for the title of Fur Rondy Queen and 2 Fur Rondy Princesses.
There are three stages to the competition, Judges personal questions (40% or their score), evening gown (40% of their score) and best costume (20% of their score). The event will be held at the new Dena'ina Convention Center on November 1st. Interested young ladies may download an application at www.furrondy.com.
Fur Rondy (officially fur rendez-vous) is in its' 74th year. It includes events like snowshoe softball, the frostbite footrace, sprint dog mushing races, snow sculpture competition and, famously added last year, the running of the reindeer. You can check out a complete list of events on their website. The event is held on the last 2 weeks of February ending with the start of the Iditarod sled dog race.

Fur Rondy was built on the fur trading tradition from our not so distant past when the trappers would come to town with their years catch to trade and sell.
