The Alaska State Fair
It's on! The Alaska State Fair is back with a vengence. This is one of my favorite events of the year. Crafts, rides, bad-for-you-food, animals, music, kitch, and fun fun fun! The hard part is getting there. There is one road that goes North up to Palmer (The Glenn Highway). Normally, it would take just one hour to get there. When the fair is on, it is anyone's guess how much traffic you will hit.
I especially enjoy going through the craft area. I even have a blue ribbon to my name for something I submitted once and a "lifetime" number assigned to me for future entries. My kids love the rides and the animals. Last year there was a pig with newborns there... born right during the fair. My husband prefers the vegetable tables with our giant local produce, such as the world record breaking kale plant last year. I also have friends who camp up there each year for the opening weekend fireworks (they're there right now... counting down).
So, if you're in the area, squeeze in a trip to the fair. Everyone will be there. You may even run into me!
