Alyeska Slush Cup
It's time again for Alyeska Resort's (in Girdwood, Alaska, 60 minutes South of Downtown Anchorage) annual Spring Carnival and Slush Cup. This event has been going on for years and is always a highlight.
The Slush Cup starts at 4:00 PM on Saturday. Honestly, who WOULDN'T want to go watch skiers and boarders zoom down the mountain, in clever costumes, gaining as much speed as possible so that they can cross a pool of slush at the bottom. Most don't make it and there are divers to help them out of the frigid water. Points are scored (In fact, Alaska's first family will be there as judges... although I'd forgive Mrs. Palin if she bagged as she had a baby last week) and one of the lucky one(s) who make it across will be declared the winner. Lots of beer (in the Sitzmark) and music make this a party of great proportion.
Other happenings at the carnival include a kids ski race, BBQ on the Sitzmark deck, paragliding exhibition, and the Idiot Swim (a chance to jump in the slush pool and swim across) starts at 3:30 just prior to the Slush Cup. My favorite events on Sunday include the dummy race (build a dummy and see how far it will ski and jump (big air gets extra points) and (watching) the tug of war which is held over the slush cup pond... more wet cold fun.
