Winterfair at Winterberry

Saturday, February 9th from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the Waldorf-inspired charter school will be holding their annual Winterfair celebration. The event is free to attend (there is music and dancing), but there is a charge for crafts, games and food. The children of the school have put together most of the events with their parents and the money raised will go toward programs for the school. There is a bake sale as well, and the school store will be open, selling handmade crafts (you won't believe the amazing things that some of the crafty parents have whipped up) in addition to the wonderful natural art supplies that the school uses (including beeswax crayons, beeswax modeling wax, Lyra pencils, wool roving, and more). Come one, come all, to the Winterberry Winterfair, on 2nd and E, in downtown Anchorage.

Winterberry is a charter K-8 school in the Anchorage School District. Simply put, a charter school is overseen and funded by the school district, but has been created by interested individuals with a certain teaching method in mind. To get a charter you must present curriculum that adheres to the standards of the school district (in addition to fitting into the ideology of the teaching method). This Waldorf-inspired school is just 3-years old. Other charter school in the area include home schooling, Montessori, ABC, and others. Charter schools are public schools and therefore open to any child in the district. Because of the high demand, entrance to these school's are by public lottery. The first lottery (for next year) is March 20th. Lottery forms are available through the school district, as well as a complete listing of all of the optional school available in the area.
