Ice Carving Competition
Anchorage's own ice carving extravaganza begins today and is in progress through Sunday at 1:00 PM. It is in Town Square (between 5th and 6th Avenues on E Street). This year's theme is "Outer Space: The Next Frontier." Six teams are competing for cash prizes. It is a treat to go and watch them as they carve, but even better is that the ice sculptures will be a part of the Town Square until they finally melt away (many months from now).
To make the trip downtown pay off in spades, pair it up with another fun event. The Performing Arts Center, which is adjacent to the Town Square, is hosting "Arts Gone Wild" on Saturday from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM. The event is free and will be lots of fun for the whole family. Music, crafts, and a warm place to huddle and cuddle in between ice-skating on the Town Square rink (bring your skates) and wandering among the icy half-formed creations that will become a translucent outdoor display by the next day.
