It is a fantastic weekend to be in Anchorage. There is SO darned much to do. The Ice Fishing Jamboree, which was originally scheduled for December but postponed due to thin ice, is on again for this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM) out on Jewel Lake. Also in the mix is a Winter Festival starting at 12:00 PM out in the "Mat-Su" valley at the college ...

If you are going to be in Anchorage this summer, you might notice that something fishy is going on around here. All over town, there will be Salmon sculptures, wildly painted, named and mounted on the city streets for all to see. This is part of the "Wild Salmon on Parade," which was inspired by "Cows on Parade" (Chicago, IL) and ""Spirit of Soul Salmon" (Olympia, WA). The salmon are ...

What a GREAT day we had! We have relatives in town and we wanted to get them out into the wilderness. Just one hour South of Anchorage, Alaska is a ski community called Girdwood. The Alyeska Resort is located there. We stopped there first to rent some snowshoes and poles for our guests (we have our own).
Although there are great trails in Girdwood (like the Winner Creek trail right ...

Suzi's Woollies is in the heart of downtown Anchorage at 420 G Street. This is a lovely little Celtic treasure trove with delightfully warm sweaters, caps, and wraps. They are also host to a toe tapping Celtic jam session at 6:00 PM on the First Friday of every month (tied into the First Friday Gallery Walk). The shop has snacks and wooden stools so that you can sit, munch, and ...

"Intuitions" is in South Anchorage. Their beautiful sparkling facility is crisp and inviting. I spent an evening with friend's back in the pedicure area. We all sat back with a glass of wine (which we brought ourselves) in our vibrating heated chairs while we were rubbed, sea salt scrubbed, and our toenails painted pretty pinks, purples and reds. I can't think of a better girlie evening... wine, chit-chat, and bright ...

A Robert W. Service Birthday Celebration will be held on Wednesday, January 16th at Title Wave Books (1360 West Northern Lights Blvd.) at 7:00 PM. Born on this day in 1874, Robert Service happened upon the Yukon while working for a bank. He wrote some poems of note, printed them for friends and ended up selling 2 million copies after it was picked up by a publisher. His second volume ...

Anchorage's own ice carving extravaganza begins today and is in progress through Sunday at 1:00 PM. It is in Town Square (between 5th and 6th Avenues on E Street). This year's theme is "Outer Space: The Next Frontier." Six teams are competing for cash prizes. It is a treat to go and watch them as they carve, but even better is that the ice sculptures will be a part of ...

This year, on Saturday, January 19th, the 23rd annual Polar Bear Plunge will take place in Seward, Alaska. I have never quite been able to talk myself into participating in the actual jump, although I have acted as a "team support member" for crazy friends who have. Picture the girl holding the towel on the dock⦠that's me! All of the funds raised go to the American Cancer Society. But, ...
