A local chocolate lounge opened in mid-town Anchorage this year. I don't drink coffee, so I've never been a "go to Starbucks" kind of gal, but a friend took me to this place called the Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge and I will never be able to drive by the Old Seward Highway and 36th street again without drooling. This is bad news for my diet. DRINKABLE CHOCOLATE! And it's dark, ...

We had the perfect snow about a month ago. It was light and fluffy and deep, at least 12 inches. We were sledding and Nordic Skiing. And THEN the warm weather came. Last year it was -15 (F). This year it has been in the 30's (F). It has been just a few degrees above freezing for weeks now... even getting into the 40's (F) on some days. It was ...

"Humpy's" is a local's favorite and tourist's delight. When I came to Alaska 12 years ago, it was THE place to go, to see, and to be seen. It was the new place on the block back then. A lot has changed in Anchorage in the past 12 years, but Humpy's is still jumpin'. In 2006, it was hip enough to win the "best bar" pick by the Anchorage Press (a local ...

Anchorage's first wood framed house was built in 1915. It is now a quaint museum called, "The Oscar Anderson House." Oscar Anderson was the "18th white man to step foot in Anchorage." It is a special treat to see it this weekend (and next weekend), between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, as the home is returned to its original Swedish Christmas Splendor. The cost is a minimal $1 - $3 ...

This ice fishing event, on December 15 & 16, is held on Jewel Lake (4342 W. 88th) every year. We have gone for 3 years running and wouldn't miss it for anything! It is a great introduction to ice fishing. First of all, this family friendly event is free, which makes it accessible to everyone. The holes are predrilled (lots and lots of them). When you get there, you are ...
