Crafters Smackdown & Native Art Classes

Again, someone wins with a great title for an event. In its 3rd year, the Crafters Smackdown is an all-out, nails and teeth bared competition. Imagine if you mixed Martha Stewart and "The Apprentice"… oh wait, that happened… okay, make it bigger and better and smoosh it all into one day and you will have a picture of this event. Sponsored by the local Congregation Beth Sholom, the event is open to anyone who dares to enter. There are team and individual events. The competition isn't until February 17, but it is less expensive if you sign up before December 31. www.frozenchosen.org

If you are crafty, but too "classy" to strut your stuff in competition, then a Native Art Class might be just the ticket. Check out www.alaskanative.net and see what is available. Classes coming up this winter include Athabascan quillwork, drum-making, and wood carving. Their master art program includes Yu'pik mask carving, making Inupiaq mukluks, Athabascan beading and Aleut basket weaving. All of these courses are taught by masters of their crafts. The classes are held at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
