Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse
"Humpy's" is a local's favorite and tourist's delight. When I came to Alaska 12 years ago, it was THE place to go, to see, and to be seen. It was the new place on the block back then. A lot has changed in Anchorage in the past 12 years, but Humpy's is still jumpin'. In 2006, it was hip enough to win the "best bar" pick by the Anchorage Press (a local "edgy" weekly newspaper, yep, the cool one). Even our more traditional newspaper, the Anchorage Daily News, took a readers poll in 2007. Humpy's won for "Best Beer Selection" AND for "Best Menu." The menu is pub fare. The fish and chips are great.
Located at 610 W. 6th Avenue, Humpy's is directly across the street from the Performing Arts Center and a block away from the Egan Center. It is centrally located in the downtown grid, easy to get to from all of the downtown hotel properties.
There is almost always live music. The music varies greatly in style, but is often local and surprisingly good. There are also television monitors for those who must have their sports. They have an outdoor patio in back that is open in the summer. Humpy's pride themselves on their beer selection (they were serving "micro" when micro wasn't cool... or even heard of... by me...). Make sure to ask what is new and what they have on tap.
