Fire and Ice New Year's Eve Celebration

This will be our third year in a row to attend the downtown Anchorage Fire and Ice Celebration with our children. The evening starts (and ends) early with kids skating parties on the Town Square rink from 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM (first for the toddlers, then older youth). The Anchortown Circus will be there to entertain. At 5:50 PM there will be a 10-minute figure skating demonstration leading into ...

New Year's at Alyeska Resort

Before I had kiddo's, this was where I spent all of my New Year's evenings. How can you beat a torchlight parade down the mountain? Yep, they take your poles and send you up (for free) the chair lift. At the top, they hand you a flaming torch and wish you well (hope for no ice) as you follow the snaking trail of human torches making their way down the ...

"Blue's Traveler" at the Bear Tooth

The first thing I think of when I hear that name is "harmonica." John Popper is playing at the Bear Tooth Theatre Pub to a sold out crowd on New Year's Eve starting at 7:00 PM. The Bear Tooth is a movie theatre that usually plays second run movies on the cheap. The bonus is that you can buy a glass of wine and bring it to your table in ...

Allure Day Spa and Hair Design

If you are going to be in Anchorage for any amount of time, you may want to call ahead and plan a stop at Allure. Voted a "top 5 salon" in the nation by "Salon Today," Allure is a must-do for those of us who love to pamper ourselves. Services include: hair design (women's cut and style range from $46 - $70), skin care (facial packages range from $85 - ...

A Diverse Array of Entertainment Options

Alaska tends to lean to the conservative side. But, Anchorage is "the big city" here, and therefore we have a better mix of alternative entertainment than anywhere else in the state. Just to give you a peek at how diverse our community is, take a look at the different events being offered up around town for Friday night (December 28th).

AK All Academics Winter Banquet and Ball: This formal event is ...

Magic Christmas Snow

After weeks of yucky warm weather, I woke up on Christmas morning to many inches of champagne powder and more coming! We have 8 to 10 inches of new snow here in Anchorage that has fallen in the last 24 hours, with more on the horizon. It is so perfect, so amazing, that I can hardly believe that I live here. Now, if it is that good in Anchorage, then ...

Outdoor Ice Skating

It's finally gotten cold enough that our Anchorage ice-skating areas are all opening. Many of them are on lakes, so you have to be "sure" before you go out on them. Town Square Park (between 5th and 6th on E Street) is just a flooded area on pavement, so they can open earlier. But to be able to open the lakes for skating, there has to be at least 1 ...

Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall

Our downtown mall is centrally located, within easy walking distance to all of the major downtown hotels. The best thing about having a mall downtown is that, whatever you need, you will probably be able to find it without too much trouble. Need extra luggage to bring home all of your Alaskan treasures? JC Penney's will have it. Need a last minute gift for the office? Grab some Alaskan Chocolates ...

Anchorage, "City of Lights"

Get out and see the best holiday decorations in Anchorage. The Anchorage Daily News (AND) polled its' readers to come up with their annual map of the "best" displays in town. We went out last year to see what our neighbors are up to, and I have to tell you that they have the holiday spirit down pat. (I can barely manage the inside stuff, much less tackle the outside ...

Crafters Smackdown & Native Art Classes

Again, someone wins with a great title for an event. In its 3rd year, the Crafters Smackdown is an all-out, nails and teeth bared competition. Imagine if you mixed Martha Stewart and "The Apprentice"… oh wait, that happened… okay, make it bigger and better and smoosh it all into one day and you will have a picture of this event. Sponsored by the local Congregation Beth Sholom, the event is ...
