Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Co-op

If you come to Anchorage and want to fly home with a very Alaskan souvenir or gift, then I suggest you stop by the Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Co-op. Their shop is in downtown Anchorage on the corner of 6th and H streets.

Owned by a group of Native Alaskan Women, the co-op purchases qiviut from the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer and other sources. After having it specially ...

Anchorage Hotel Room Count grows to 8000

Anchorage and Alaska Tourism continue to grow. The two newest properties that are going up are both in mid-town. The Embassy Suites is building a 169-room hotel, which should open in February. And the Holiday Inn has a new 166-room property opening next September. Mid-town is a great spot for business travelers, close to restaurants, movie theatres and shopping galore.

Chilkoot Charlie's

Chilkoot Charlie's, AKA "Koots" is where the music, dance, and night life is for those who need no (or little) sleep. They "cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you." They grew up from a sleepy little bar in the early 70's to the wild packed crazy spot that it is today. They now have 3 dance floors, 3 stages and 11 bars. The bar is maze like as ...

Alyeska Resort Opens for Skiing

Alyeska Resort opened the mountain for the first day of skiing today, November 17th! Keep in mind that today was their planned opening day, but their new snow making equipment was not yet operating and there was some doubt as to their ability to open on time. Lucky for them, we just happened to get a huge dump of snow, which brought their base to 89-inches at the summit. If ...

Dog Sledding in Alaska

Alaska is an adventure. Everywhere you look, nature is beckoning you to experience it somehow. In winter, the dog mushers ARE Alaska , distilled. They certainly work hard year-round to enjoy their winter sport! Imagine having 12 dogs (or 50 to 300 dogs like the big kennels have). There must be a lot of poop to scoop! But, for the hardy souls who thrive in the winter landscape, a dog ...

Carr's/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout

It is the "final four" of Alaska. Only, it's more like "the First Four" as it is the "longest running early season college basketball tournament." Held in Anchorage every year over the week of Thanksgiving, The Great Alaska Shootout is big enough to bring in, gasp, TRAFFIC. (I'm sure this is not a big deal to those of you from big cities… but we sure notice it up here!)

Both the ...

Alaska Ace's

Anchorage's home hockey team offers you a chance to indulge in a real sport for a change. No mamby-pamby play by the rules sport… hmmm… okay, I guess there ARE rules in hockey, but I hardly notice them in the excitement.

The first time I went to a game, the announcer led the crown in the cry, "Hey goalie, your mother called. She said to tell you, "You S**K!" I ...

Theatre: "Growing Up Native in Alaska"

We have a thriving arts culture in Alaska. Much of the time our performance arts consist of bringing Broadway shows or musicians up to Alaska from the lower 48. But every once and a while, a real Alaskan experience will be offered as well.

Currently running at Cyrano's Playhouse is a one-man show entitled, "Growing Up Native in Alaska." Presented as a part of Alaska Native Heritage Month, this show ...
