Craft Fair & Rie Munoz at the Anchorage Museum this Weekend

The Anchorage Museum of History and Art is hosting its annual holiday craft fair over the long Thanksgiving weekend. This juried show (artists had to show samples of their work to be selected to participate) features 45 artists selling their crafts, including: fiber arts, pottery, jewelry, and handmade glass items. One of the perks of attending the craft show is that the entrance to the museum is FREE! What a bonus, especially considering that the Rie Munoz exhibit just went in.

You may not think that you know who Rie Munoz is, but I assure you that if you see just one of her paintings, you will immediately recognize the style. Her work is synonymous with Alaska. Her themes are Alaskan in nature, berry picking, hot-tubbing under the northern lights, and native children playing. Her work is features, not only on canvas, but on coffee mugs, t-shirts and cards all across the state.

The legend goes that she came to Alaska in the early 50's on vacation. She stepped off of her ship in Juneau to find a quaint charming town and fell in love with it. She spent the day looking for a job and once she found one, she returned to the ship, grabbed her things and disembarked for her new life of adventure. She has since lived all over the state, but maintains a gallery in Juneau. We love her work and I am looking forward to seeing it on display at the museum!

Now, if all of that is not enough to lure you in to the museum this weekend, there is also a book fair going on featuring more than 20 writers and illustrators. I went to this event last year and found some wonderful locally written books.
