Anchorage Hotel Room Count grows to 8000

Anchorage and Alaska Tourism continue to grow. The two newest properties that are going up are both in mid-town. The Embassy Suites is building a 169-room hotel, which should open in February. And the Holiday Inn has a new 166-room property opening next September. Mid-town is a great spot for business travelers, close to restaurants, movie theatres and shopping galore.

Anchorage is the jumping off point for almost all tourism in the state. Even with all of the additional hotels that have been built in the last 20 years, there is still demand for more, especially in the summertime. The new $93 million dollar Convention Center set to open in Fall of 2008 will enable Anchorage to host larger conventions of up to 5000 delegates, tripling the current convention capacity of the city.

If you think 8000 hotel rooms is a lot for a city of just 270,000+ people, think again. Just ask anyone who has tried to get a room here on June 21 in past years. That is the longest day of the year. It also marks the height of tour season AND the governors race (our biggest, most well known marathon).

There is a lot to see and do here in Alaska! Many of the best and most exciting trips into the wilderness start right here in Anchorage. In fact, you don't even have to leave the city to experience the wilderness. Moose and bear live within the city limits. The 2nd most fished salmon river in the state runs through downtown Anchorage. And there are well over 200 miles of trails that run through the greenbelts and nearby mountains that take you out of sight of the city so fast, you'll forget that it's there!

So book your room and come visit Anchorage!
