The Matheran Light Railway Meanders through Picturesque Terrain of Maharashtra
On April 15, 2007, the centenary of the Matheran Light Railway was celebrated with fanfare. The 1917-built B-class steam locomotive pulls the six-coach train, connecting Mumbai with Matheran, at the speed of 12 miles / hour. The railway has been included in the first world heritage list of UNESCO.
Matheran, near Mumbai, is a fine example of eco-tourism destination. Beyond Aman Lodge railway station and Dasturi Point, no vehicles are allowed. Travelers and locals have to cover about 3-km distance between these points and Matheran on foot, cycle, horses or hand-pulled rickshaws. Matheran, the hill station, has a number of view points offering panoramic views of the state.
