Lamma Island - A Quick Escape

The presence of many artists, secluded beaches as well as the prohibition of cars gives this 8 square mile island, located 20 minutes (via a ferry ride) from Hong Kong Island, a relaxed ambiance.  The two major towns (using the loosest definition of ‘town’), Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan, are separated by a well paved path that takes 1 hour to walk.  The path carves through thick jungles before rising to provide views of the coves and cliffs along the west side of the island.

Western restaurants and bars along Yung Shu Wan’s main street attract people looking for a quiet afternoon or evening escape. A few art shops and a small temple at the end of ‘the road’ produce a bohemian vibe - something rare in Hong Kong. For a different dining experience, head to the wall of outdoor seafood restaurants lining Sok Kwu Wan. These restaurants allow you to pick out your fish from endless rows of tanks – but beware of large portion sizes.
